A dog can't be surprised that way

Dogs, as everyone should know, who have watched even a few episodes of "The Dog Whisperer" or even "Cesar 911", sense energies, emotions, feelings, auras, etc. immediately. They also have a REALLY keen sense of smell that can separate a cell phone smell from office supplies.

There is _NO_ way that a dog could be surprised the way Claudia's character surprises the dog. The dog would sense the 'evil energy' that the guy has, and the intentions he has, and either growl, bark, or stay away (or all three or some combination thereof).

Why would the dog even approach a living evil entity like that? From the dog's point of view, the body is not dead, so it's not food, and there's a powerful living energy to be felt, so it's not an easy kill, and the entity is not 'calm and assertive', but 'murderous and raving mad'.

The dog scene is completely unrealistic - a dog would never approach like that, and it could never, ever be surprised like that. You can't lie to a dog, you can't fool a dog, you can't fake or hide your emotions/intentions from a dog, and you certainly can't surprise a dog that way.

Why would a police chief take his dog with him to a crime scene anyways?

Absolutely right. But for purposes of the script, it was written that way. Of course they could've skipped the dog and had her go into the lieutenant but they likely wanted to break the chain of human to human.
