The crowd at the end (spoilers)

So having just seen Kyle MacLachlan roast the senator, not only are they still all sitting there instead of fleeing the room, but they then see an alien come out of Senator McCrispy's mouth, and Kyle outs with a ray gun and makes the alien explode, and there is NO REACTION from them. No screams, no gasps, no anything. Weak.

Decent movie, though.

I always wondered why the senator's protection team wasn't blowing Kyle away when he fell to his knees and pulled out the flame thrower? They had enough time to either subdue him or empty enough lead into him to make 1,000,000 pencils lol.

When Kyle pulled out the thrower no one had any idea that the senator was possessed by a murderous alien, it was still a run of the mill assassination attempt at that point.

Also, there are 600 guys with drawn guns and no one shoots at him while he is roasting the "senator" b4 the monster came out. They needed some better writing there.

Why would anyone in their right mind risk firing bullets on someone wielding a powerful flamethrower that can reach more than 30 feet? All he had to do was turn in their direction and they'd be toast. And it's not as though their bullets had been effective at that point anyway.

For me, the most hilarious part about the ending is the fact that even tho he's just torched a guy at a press conference and used an alien gizmo to blast some strange worm-like creature into oblivion in front of the media, MacLachlan is left to just chill in his hospital room and wander into Beck's room freely! It's almost like he's in there to have his tonsils removed

I don't have a problem with them not continuing to shoot at Lloyd when he pulls out the flamethrower and roasts the senator. My problem is with what happens after that whole scene.

I mean, everyone there(including the press and most likely live tv cameras) saw an alien come out of the senator, and then Lloyd kill it with an energy weapon. Yet what happens? He's sent to a regular hospital, and isn't even under guard. Shouldn't he be taken by the government and heavily questioned or dissected or something?? Shouldn't his raygun be confiscated and taken apart to see how it works? This is the only thing that makes no sense at all to me. You would think that the whole alien killing scene never even happened, with what happens afterward.

The weapon Lloyd used to kill the alien was confiscated by federal authorities and it was sent to Cyberdyne Systems. The same Cyberdyne Systems from "Terminator 2." It's in the same vault as the metal arm and computer chip from the first terminator in "The Terminator." Cyberdyne Systems is also located in California where this movie took place.

They had shot him so much, it didn't even make sense that he was still alive. So they probably left him in a hospital room mostly dead like they did with DeVries at the beginning of the movie. They didn't expect him to wake up.

What happened was that there was a different ending to what was seen onscreen. In the original script [according to the commentary], the Alien entered the Senator, who then got on a plane & left. It went after to the scene in the hospital to where Beck was being tended to. Because of the change from the script, the original writer used a different name for credit because he was against this. It was supposed to have an ambiguous ending but the director and producers felt that they needed to resolve this so the flame thrower was thrown in as well. The writer apparently has come to terms on this ending.
