Hellraiser The Scarlet Box
Hellraiser The Scarlet Box looks to be ultimate edition of this horror classic. The first three Hellraiser movies are being released in a massive special edition called The Scarlet Box and it looks amazing. It’s hard to really get across how good Hellraiser is, especially given its reputation as something of a video nasty. But Cliver Barker’s 1987 film, adapted from his owen novella The Hellbound Heart, is quite simply one of the best horror films of the modern era with a well-told story, gorgeously gory effects and the full glory of the Cenobites - characters who revel in pleasure and pain and are much more than one dimensional genre bad guys.
Barker, in his feature filmmaking debut, managed to work wonders with a budget of just £1 million and we’re always sorry that he hasn’t had the chance to make more films - Lords of Illusions is especially underrated. At least his first classic is getting the treatment it deserves with the Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box from Arrow Films.
This major new release to blu-ray of the initial Hellraiser trilogy has been teased before but now the full splendour of the box has been revealed. And it might just tear your soul apart.
The wealth of content on offer here is pretty staggering, starting with 2K restorations of all three films with new audio, special commentaries and behind the scenes docs. The actors, writers, directors and more have reassembled to talk about the films at length, and there’s even cut material which has never been released before - like the Surgeon scene from Hellraiser II and the unrated version of the third film.
That’s in addition to the physical extras, including a 200 page hardback book, a 20 page booklet with never before seen concept art, special packaging, art cards and a poster featuring the ever-present Pinhead.
This new collector’s set is currently available for pre-order at a discounted price of £49.99. Stock is limited so get your order in ahead of the release date of October 26th 2015.
