religious imagery
Why was those so much Christian imagery in the house? I didn't get the impreesion that anybody in the story was religious. Maybe those things were already a part of the set for some reason?

shareIt kind of just goes with the religious theme throughout the film.
shareDidn't Larry say the Catholic statues belonged to his mother?
And what religious theme is in this movie? It's a story about invaders from another dimension. Leviathan, the Cenobites and "Hell" have nothing to do with Christianity or any other religion.
le·vi·a·than
l??v??TH?n/
noun
(in biblical use) a sea monster, identified in different passages with the whale and the crocodile (e.g., Job 41, Ps. 74:14), and with the Devil (after Isa. 27:1).
a very large aquatic creature, especially a whale.
"the great leviathans of the deep"
a thing that is very large or powerful, especially a ship.
hell
hel/
noun
1.
a place regarded in various religions as a spiritual realm of evil and suffering, often traditionally depicted as a place of perpetual fire beneath the earth where the wicked are punished after death.
synonyms: the netherworld, the Inferno, the infernal regions, the abyss; More
These are religious terms. The "other dimension" = hell.
Come on man.. you really don't think this movie has anything to do with hell/ religion/ suffering? "Jesus wept.."?? Like OP mentioned- the statues/decorations? Its not the focus of the story per say - but it is undoubtedly a subtext. And IMO- pretty key to understanding what's really going on. The term "demons" alone should have been a huge hint for you. Just saying
Fair enough. On the surface you're right. What I meant though was that I don't believe that the entities in these movies truly have anything to do with religion. Perhaps they are the "truth behind the myth" in the Hellraiser movie universe as another poster has suggested.
shareOk ok. I would agree with that notion... In the Hellraiser universe, these "monsters" for lack of a better word, are what is behind "the myth" of religion. In my opinion, it seemed they were specifically catering to hell.
Pinhead himself has the well known line "we are demons to some- angels to others." Demons and angels are religious terms. Obviously- they are not angels to us viewers. "These are demons from hell" might be a bit of a stretch - but - there is some sort of connection. I'm pretty sure the skeleton firedragon at the end is Satan- looking over his cube. Or ..The devil is involved somehow - at least. I also saw the film for the first time last night with no prior knowledge so take what I say with a grain of salt.
The idea though, that they are just some random demons from some random sadomasochistic world seems cool- but I just don't really think that's what Hellraiser is about. Hell is the title of the movie FFS
shareIn the Hellraiser universe the dragon at the end of the movie might be Leviathan. I doubt it's the Satan of religion but it might be some kind of evil being that is the origin of the religious concept of Satan. Like Hell might be the origin of the religious idea of Hell.
Maybe it's like the ancient astronaut hypothesis. That alien involvement with humans over the ages created our religious beliefs. That aliens were seen as gods, their technological abilities were seen as miracles, painful alien abductions came to be seen as Hell, etc. In this case the aliens would be powerful creatures from another dimension.

It was Frank and Larry's parents house who had passed away. All of the religious stuff was left behind by them.
shareI always imagined that Frank kept him around the house in an attempt to scare off the bad guys.
