Holy crap, what a terrible movie!!!

I was tossing back some beers last night and came upon this stinker of a movie and decided to throw it on. What a piece of *beep*! Robin Williams isn't remotely funny, he is however, massively annoying. I felt bad for the actors that had to pretend to laugh at his suck ass jokes. I don't know why people think this douchebag is tallented at all.

The signature line of the OP is clearly indicative of why his opinion on a film is worthless. If you can't properly quote a classic piece of dialogue from a timeless film, your judgment of anything regarding film is automatically suspect.

Jake: How often does the train go by?
Elwood: So often that you won't even notice it.

reply

Too right.
And in case OP is still confused, it's "Get busy living, or get busy dying".

reply

It's a year later. He's either too busy living or he died before he could change the sig.

Plus the fact that Andy (Tim Robbins) said it. (fast forward to 2:50 into this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tkzc983aE0#t=167)

(I am also thinking though...didn't Red also say it LATER in the film...basically quoting Andy in one of his post-parole voice-overs?)

Yes, Red says it right before he carves his name into the beam.

It wasn't a terrible movie, but it wasn't very good either, mostly because Robin Williams, like you said, isn't very funny.

Another reason the movie wasn't very good was that it was yet another liberal, anti-Vietnam War story, with some anti-Nixon jabs thrown in for good measure. Movies like this are un-interesting, contrived, shallow, and overly simplistic.

Oh please, he was an equal opportunity comic...he made fun of Roosevelt too, one of the most far-left presidents we've ever had (not as far left as Obama, who is the human equivalent of the Leaning Tower of Pisa). And Nixon WAS deserving of comedy.

Don't be an idiot. Who would care if he made fun of Roosevelt? What's there to make fun of?

As for Nixon "deserving of comedy": the movie takes place in 1965, when Nixon had completely vanished from politics. He had nothing to do with the Vietnam War up to that point. If the filmmakers had been honest and brave, they would have trashed and ridiculed Lyndon Johnson's name because HE was the one who sent US troops to Vietnam and led America into disaster. But then LBJ was a big-time liberal, so he gets a pass.

Having seen the movie again, there might be some confusion over this. One of the caller characters Robin Williams made up is named "Roosevelt E. Roosevelt" and was the one talking about the guy in the orange robes bursting into flames lol

reply

Your opinion.
One I don't agree with, however.

You guys do realize that this movie was made 25 years ago, right? You can't always take something from the past and put it into your "now" mindset. At the time, this movie was hugely popular, Williams was at the height of his stardom and the movie resonated with people as Vietnam was only 10 years in the past.

the extreme humidity is what made them laugh.

I love the movie. Robin Williams is hilarious

Over-rated - probably
Mediocre - maybe
Horrible - NO

There are plenty of movies that are much worse than this movie. Even if you don't like or understand Williams' style of humor, there were still enough of the movie to be entertaining.

If you were expecting an all-time great movie - this isn't it. If you want a decent movie that is worth seeing once - this is it.

I don't think they were pretending. Everything he said on the air was ad-libbed. Also the soldiers in the trucks weren't actors.
