'If I were you, I'd think about suicide'

First 10 minutes in and Forrest Whittaker tells Robin Williams to commit suicide

Actually watching this movie for the first time, and I caught that line too....those kind of lines with him seem so awkward to me now.

I also watched "The Angriest Man in Brooklyn" today, where he tries to jump off a bridge at one point, and later asks someone "would you want to know when you're gonna die?"

reply

And he's also in World's Greatest Dad where his son dies from autoerotic asphyxiation so he makes it look like suicide to cover it up.

reply

I just finished watching this movie and audibly gasped at that line. Oh my god.

And his characters wife commits suicide in what dreams may come and he reacts pretty badly to her resting place.

reply

Fisher King, Dead Poets, did he make a movie that wasn't about suicide? It's like some Hollywood executive was running a brainwashing program

In Patch Adams his character was also suicidal. Became something of a sad tradition for him.

@Leoneswest And his character in Father's Day.

Man, this list is unreal, I watched the Birdcage recently and Robins Williams says: "If you don't finish making up, I'm going to kill myself."

reply

Also, I can't hear the line about rope and hanging during the first radio broadcast anymore without wanting to just turn off the movie, because it just makes me unbeliveably sad.

I've just finished watching this film for the first time and that line plus the hanging joke not long after actually made me gasp out loud.

It's just so.....I have no words.

I just watched this wonderful film again on Channel Four (UK) (weirdly enough, it was scheduled before Williams' death, yet it feels like a tribute), and yes, the lines about suicide and hanging during the same early scene were quite eerie (and I did gasp a little at the tragic coincidence). But I was quickly able to dismiss that and simply enjoy this movie as a perfect testament to Williams' brilliance as a comedian and as a dramatic actor. Like Adrian Cronauer in this film Williams' comedy and generosity of spirit simply made life that much more bearable for all those he entertained and crossed paths with. That's what I take from this wonderful film.

I did enjoy the film, a great film by the way, but I just didn't expect those eerie lines.

I actually also watched it on Channel 4.

I watched it today and it did upset me considering what happened decades later.

Yep Suicide is a theme among Robins movies.

Even Mork made a suicide joke on atleast two different occasions.

It seems too ironic to be true, sadly.
