Spoilers, why did he shoot himself in that bathroom?

Did that young man played by Vincent D'Onofrio really feel so bad about being constantly bullied by the Drill Instructor and his army training peers and cadets that he felt damaged enough to both shoot and kill first the drilling instructor and then himself?

reply

He was thought to be some toilet. He should have been sent home instead of being fucked with. He is dumb, but was not crazy until then.

"He was thought to be some toilet."
Maybe that explains his choice of a location where he shot himself, lol, a bit of Kubrick-esque black humour there. :(

My take is that he had reduced the (his) entire world to nothingness and that pushed him over the edge.

"I LIVE in a world of shit."

I try not to overthink scenes like this. Any question regarding a scene that you are not sure about, can be answered by saying its a plot hole.

"Any question regarding a scene that you are not sure about, can be answered by saying its a plot hole."
But that's NOT the main reason I and other viewers can be unsure about something, and it does NOT make it a "plot hole", which by the way actually has a very SPECIFIC definition to it.

In this case, it is just how I and others may have INTERPRETED something and it also doesn't mean we didn't understand it, not to mention, specific reasons filmmaker has intended.

And even many things we may LEGITIMATELY suspect as ACTUAL "plot holes" may ultimately still NOT be "it" in any way, shape or form whatsoever.

The film "Lost Highway" (1997) by the way is incredibly bizarre and often downright intentionally confusing, but it doesn't mean that whatever happens in it that we couldn't, for instance, fully comprehend, is an example of an outright "plot hole".

And that's not even taking into account, and no offense to anyone, that some people may not have simply been paying attention to a scene at one point or something, or were further curious about it etc and were simply personally not sure or if their opinion is really the correct one, hardly a matter of "plot holes" and the lot. )

I didn't see it as any deep thinking maneuver on his part - I saw it as he lost his mind (meaning the character - forgot his name - I think the drill called him Gomer Pyle). He just couldn't hack Marine Basic Training. He lost his mind. Pretty simple IMO.

reply

So in a nutshell though, its not JUST because of his bullying and mistreatment while in the army training, right?

reply

His mental health was quite obviously fucked. Probably had PTSD and all sorts of problems. And it probably wasn't going to get better once he was in country. He killed the cunt that did it to him and then put himself out of his misery "I already am in a world of hell".

reply

This wasn't the army, It was the USMC, call any marine a soldier , then ask for help picking up your teeth.

reply

This is why most marines are douchebags

If he'd shot himself in his bunk and he'd failed his mission, they would have made him clean the sheets.
