How is Private Pyle one of the film's antagonists?

I always felt sympathy for Private Pyle and wanted to see him succeed, he never meant any harm and disrespect towards the Drill Instructor and the other marines.

In a competitive and disciplined environment such as that, there's a motivation to assist the weakest link.

I always wondered why the Army even accepted him, it is obvious there is something wrong. Not to mention his weight.
