What would Hartman do if someone said yes when asked if they were Gay?

Hartman makes the big huge homophobic speech about how "Are you
Gay? Do you suck dicks? Etc" to Private Pyle and other recruits and acts like a lunatic about it, i have lived in New York City and Miami before, both places are full of Homosexuals, gays and lesbians and everywhere in between, crossdressers you name it, none of them ever hid their homosexuality in public and i never had a problem with it, most people just ignore it too.

But how would Hartman have reacted if the Marine Corps had recruited an openly gay guy from say Greenwich Village in New York City where homosexuals are very common and it is the norm? Or someone from San Francisco that was gay and proud? Or a Miami Beach gay that partied on the beaches gay nightclubs on the strip? One of these guys could have easily made the draft and been forced to go to Boot Camp too, just like anyone else, then reacted naturally by saying yes when asked if they sucked dicks or liked to have sex with men, they would not be ashamed of it and wouldnt pretend to be straight, most gay men do not hide it at all, even in the 1960s, not in the big cities, this translates into boot camp and the military too.

reply

He would do nothing because such people would NEVER sign up for that crap.

Better ask what the army drill instructors would do, since back then they dealt with draftees, and thus some gays would fall in there, no matter what.

reply

What? "Such people"? There are lots of gay Marines, always have been.

reply

Since homosexuals were not allowed in the military then, he would pretty much have no choice but to kick them out.

Or he would have them sent home, because it was illegal to have homosexuals in the military at the time, and he would have NO CHOICE in following the law and military regulations. If he diid what you said, he could at best hope for a reduction in rank and loss of his drill instructor position.

I think some guys did try to avoid getting drafted by saying they were gay.

reply

It was one of the few things that automatically got you disqualified. When my dad's friend went for his physical that was required for service, one of the guys got "aroused" by the doctor. They told him to get his stuff and go home.

I think that a lot of people during Vietnam, World War 2 or even in recent times have probably acted Gay on purpose or pretended to be Homosexual knowing full well that they might be able to get discharged under the militaries morally corrupt policy in the past of not allowing homosexuals and lesbians to serve in the armed forces, think about it from the POV of a Draftee, you are forced to go to boot camp to train in the Army or Marines and cannot say no or i quit and go home and get a regular 9 to 5 job like you were doing or wanted to do, then you find out that gays are not allowed and you act like a sterotypical homosexual on purpose in front of the Drill Sgt and get kicked out without a dishonorable or bad conduct discharge.

That would be a brilliant way to avoid the draft and i would do that if i was drafted in those times, if any beatings occurred then you just sue the DI or recruits in question and you resume your civilian life without any consequence.

I do know a lot of gays and lesbians that would never deny being what they are at all, that would tell anyone to their face proudly that they are that way, even in boot camp or The Marine Corps which is as macho as you can possibly get, this culture encourages pride in such things and nobody cares enough to hide it, and in New York City and the northeast nobody did in the 1960s at all either, one of those guys could easily get his draft notice in the mail and report to boot camp at Parris Island or The Army boot camp and may just admit that they were gay when the DI mockingly brought it up, just like how some guy at a bar might bring it up as an insult and they fight back verbally, that would happen and the backlash would happen too.

Not sure about that I haven't seen 'the imitation game' but didn't they find out he was gay after ww2 and send him to prison and not too long ago in UK gays where sent to mental hospitals and basically tortured into being straight am sure that still happened in 60's I doubt the US was anymore politically correct.

Nobody here watched mash? Cpl. Klinger used to dress in women's clothing to get sent home. Everybody ignored him because they knew he was full of sheet and tried to get out of Korea.

Considering the OP hypothetical, don't forget a gay male in THAT ultra testosterone environment wouldn't stood a chance. The alpha males would've gave him blanket parties til his skin fell off, and the others would go along, or at the least, been indifferent. No one would've raised a finger to assist and if this recruit tried to report antone, the higher ups would've turned it around and had him discharged under " failure to adapt" or something along these lines.

If you were gay in the 1960s, aside from in a few communities in big cities, you kept schtum. Gay people were ostracised, harassed by the police and security agencies, quite often summarily or constructively dismissed from jobs, and walked a very fine line to stay out of prison.

Good times.

I think the OP is falling into the trap of assuming modern attitudes prevailed in the past.

No the OP has fallen into the trap of not knowing a thing about a thing and deciding to believe whatever shyte he invents in his head.

Corporal Klinger was completely different. He wanted to get out for being insane not for being a homosexual. They were going to put him out as a homosexual one time. (I think it was the first episode the psychiatrist character appeared in.) Corporal Klinger denied emphatically that he was a homosexual and choose to stay in rather than get that discharge. It served as commentary to how screwed he would have been had he taken it. (No pun intended.)

It wasn't the military's policy. It was federal law, as voted on by Congress and signed into law by the President. Strike one.

After being discharged from the United States military a homosexual or one feigning homosexuality would be subjected to relentless discrimination for decades to come. Good luck trying to get a decent job. Strike two.

So your contention is that there were no closeted homosexuals living in NYC or the entire northeast during the 1960's? You don't know a thing about the 1960's. Strike three idiot. You're out.

It wasn't Joker's atheism that got him the squad leader position: it was sticking to his guns when harangued about it by Hartman.

reply

I dont think that a gay Marine would be treated very kindly during Vietnam, but Hartman liked people that had guts and might put him in the charge of other recruits because guts were a good thing, but it would have a negative backlash from him and the other DI's and recruits, there might be gay recruits in that era but they usually pretended to be straight or avoided bringing up their sexual orientation in front of their fellow Marines and Soldiers because the old Military was a hotbed full of testosterone and alpha male BS and chauvinism and being homosexual openly in those days was the opposite of that, it would be like wearing a dress and acting like a wimpy douche, it was considered feminine and girly and would be treated as such and those who acted like that would be punished or abused by the macho idiots that hated that lifestyle.

Homosexuality was sometimes claimed as a way of avoiding military service, as they were not supposed to be enlisted (those who made the claim were not necessarily gay in actuality). I think Hartman would have treated it as an attempt to avoid service and might just have beat on them harder.
