Cut down to a short film instead?

A lot of people, including myself, have made thoughts on how only the first half of the movie was so extraordinary, as it's hard to compare it to the other half. I've been thinking, what if this movie was cut down as a short-movie instead? With only the military training seasons being included and nothing else, would you think it could have been considered as a academy award winning short-film?

I agree. The 2nd half in Vietnam was too overly antiwar and kind of boring. However i dont think a short version film of just the training would have been successful. Kubrick should have thought out a better 2nd half. Something less antiwar snarky and more action and showing the men using their basic training knowledge. The whole l-o-n-g segment of Joker and the newspaper/ propaganda segment is what really killed the same 2nd half for me. Also.... SAVE THE IMDB MESSAGE BOARDS PLEASE!!!!!
