I've loved this movie since 87
Why the hell isn't it widescreen?

It is, in the UK, Region 2. Widescreen 1.85:1:

Damn it! I just ordered the region 1 dvd from Amazon - should have paid more attention, I just assumed it'd be widescreen - who the hell wants a dvd in 4:3 anyway...?

I got the region 2, anamorphic 1.85:1 :) *beep* full screen

Two years later and still no decent DVD release. What gives?

I hadn't seen this flick since I owned a copy on VHS, so I recently rented it from Netflix hoping for a widescreen experience. Alas. It looked exactly like my old VHS copy.

That is a 4 disc set of 4 action movies with extreme prejudice as one, not sure if its widescreen though. No one has reviewed it yet on amazon.

If you have a region 2 player, you can order the title from play.com ,the u.k version is widescreen, aspect ratio 1:85:1

Is the full screen open matte? If so it would benefit certain scenes where the violence is on the corner of the screen.

Yes, it is. I've compared scenes from both and you definitely see more image at top and bottom in the fullscreen version.
