It's been quite a few years since I saw this, but isn't it essentially a remake of Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch? I don't see any references to it here... maybe I need to watch it again...

IMO, the only similarity between the two films are the shootouts at the end of each one.

I watched it again recently and you're right, it's just the end! Don't know why I thought it was the whole movie...

It a homage to several Peckinpah films:
The Wild Bunch- The shootout at the end.
The Getaway- The bank robbery covered by an explosion.
The Killer Elite- A squad of trained killers contracted to do an assignment.
