Instead of being dumb to say "I beat you" then he wouldn't have gotten eaten by the slime, he should have ran to the car, turn on the engines and drive away. He would have told people about what happened and tell people to stay away from that lake.

A sequel could be made of police investigating their disappearences and trying to search the lake results in more deaths.

I wrote a fan script idea way back with a similar idea. A few kids overhear the rumors about the lake, and how people never come back after going out to the raft. They make wagers to disprove the myth and go out to the lake. Like with the story, they begin to fall to the creature. One person does manage to make it to shore and runs off to the police station for help. The cops think it's another college prank, but go along with the lone survivor where they're met with a fate similar to Randy's. It would end with the creature trying to devour the cars to remove any remaining evidence.
But one circulating around an investigation would be so great.

the raft creature was diabetic and too woozy to do the wave; until the very end, after its blood sugar leveled out.

Personally, I would have had him make it all the way into the car and when he tries to back up he looks thru the back window and is going nowhere, spinning tires, and gets pulled into the lake car and all.
