Colin Wilson's 'A Criminal History of Mankind'

I noticed a scene in which Amanda Donohoe's character is reading Colin Wilson's "A Criminal History of Mankind." However, the book came out in 1984, so I'm curious: Did the events portrayed in the movie take place in 1984-'85 (and therefore around the time of the book's release), or was that a continuity goof?

A goof. In the biginning they go out of their way to show (via news clips) that it takes place right after the assassination attempt on John Paul II, which ocurred in 1981.

The books they have with them are so random and completely add to the feeling that their psyche is running free.
