When the name Van Damme comes up there are about 3 or 4 movies that I could watch over and over again.......Bloodsport, Cyborg, Kickboxer and Universal Soldier, but which is best??...
I never really cared all that much for Universal Soldier. It's a bit of a different beast... Bigger budget and better quality, but more of a generic action film. Of the rest, I'd say that Cyborg is the most interesting, but Bloodsport is the most entertaining. Kickboxer doesn't really pack the punch of the others. It's good, but it's not Bloodsport. Plus we already have Bloodsport, do we really need another? Although nothing beats that dancing in Kickboxer... So yeah, I guess we needed it after all. :P
This guy is correct. Objectively. It's Bloodsport and it's not even close, and Kickboxer is second. If you were born in the 80s you should get this. The other movies are good, but it's clear.
It's like asking what are the best Stallone movies. You have to look at the Rocky and Rambo series first. With Van Damme it's Bloodsport and Kickboxer.
Bloodsport and Hard Target are by far the most kick ass movies van diesel has to offer, bloodsport needs no explanation, as for hard target, he punches a SNAKE in the GODDAMNED FACE.
In my opinion I would say Bloodsport is the more entertaining film with Timecop being the better written script and overall just more interesting (story-wise).
I really wanted to like Universal Soldier more especially since it had a really intriguing story concept. But, like someone already mentioned, it just ended up being rather bland.
The other films that Van Damme has been in are just regular formulaic action films. Not much in the way of story, acting or plot. But they are entertaining to watch, or kill time, as the case may be.
In my opinion, Bloodsport is the best, Kickboxer a distant second, and all his others kind of blend together as a distant third.
None of them really stand out for me, Cyborg was interesting in some ways but actually felt like a chore to watch in some ways, Timecop I loooooved the concept, it could have been the greatest action movie ever, but it just fell short constantly. Universal Soldier sticks in my mind for some reason, although that's as much Dolf as it is a Jean Claude film. Double Impact I quite liked, partly because it had some good fights, partly because of the evil twin thing, and partly because the blonde got me really hot when I was about 10 or whatever. Basically, I like them all, but Bloodsport stood out.
All the early Van Damme films are great, including Black Eagle and No Retreat No Surrender 3!!
But my order of top 5 would be the following:
1. Double Impact - can't beat twice the Van Damme, to me his most memorable characters, most memorable lines (due to hilarity) and most memorable acting.
2. Bloodsport - What could be better than seeing a Dim Mak or the scream at the end? The competition aspect of the film, the chase scene with Helmer and Rollins and the kid who plays Van Damme in his youth propel this to number 2. To honour you....shidoshi.
3. Kickboxer - Tong Po. Van Damme dancing. A totem eagle. Nuff said.
4. Hard Target - Van Damme owning the role which should have been Gambit in X-Men and Lance Henriksen going nuts.
5. AWOL / Lionheart - The ability for Van Damme to win so many matches using the same moves is amazing. As is his betting partner and street smart friend Joshua 'Lionheart, no-one gives a muthatruckin rats ass about your muthatruckin ass', as is his enemy and finally the best line in the film...... 'wrong bet!!!'
Just my thoughts.
Gothamite #3 "But it happened at sea! See? C for Catwoman!!"
1. Bloodsport (hands-down my favorite) 2. Nowhere to Run (haven't seen it mentioned, but I could watch it over and over. Sam is a really great character, and you've gotta love Mookie) 3. Lionheart (Leon is another good character)
After those 3, my list changes depending on what mood I'm in. I do really like Universal Soldier and and Hard Target a lot, though.
