Does this count as a plot hole? SPOILER

I don't understand this part of the plot. The main character lies to the police about identifying the suspect in an assault. However, since the MC chose to follow the suspect around and he followed him to the bar, of where the last victim was last scene, why didn't he just tell the police, that he followed him to the bar and saw him looking at the last victim, since that it was happened?

It seems that if he had said that, it would have been more evidence to convict on the murder and it would have sufficed better.

But yet he chose to keep that a secret from the police. Why?

A plot hole is defined (I recently learned on Wikipedia) as an inconsistency within a movie, i.e. the movie does not follow its previously set rules. So if the whole movie is based on a character's stupidity (nay, two characters'), than one more stupid decision would constitute a consistency, and couldn't possibly be a plot hole. Am I right or am I right?
