Smart, fun, well-scripted and often ingenius, culminating in a brilliant courtroom scene with Wallace Shawn as a cunning defense attorney.
Then the movie undergoes a lobotomy. The second half feels like a completely different (and much dumber) film.
Which is a shame, because it was on its way to becoming a classic.

shareI disagree. I think the scene where Denise goes in to the bar to trick Henderson at the end of the film is great too. I would say that scene and the courtroom scene are both the best.I spoke to Brad Greenquist by email, and he said that that was his favourite scene.He also told me that Elizabeth McGovern wasn't really there in the scene where he pulls her wig off, because there was a focus problem when shooting that scene. His acting is brilliant in this film.
Well the ending went down a little too easily, but the second half moved straight into film noir territory, which is never a bad idea. There sure is a kind of lobotomy involved, but it's operated by the femme fatale upon the poor schmuck, which is more often than not the basic film noir plot device.
there's a highway that is curling up like smoke above her shoulder
