I think it would have worked given the shows it preceded. This would have been Psycho/Love Boat/Fantasy Island. Hey if you can try to make a resort on Gilligan's Island a series why wouldn't this have worked?

I think people that watched it expected something else, so this didn't really have a chance. Like what happened with HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH, which in my opinion is probably the scariest film in the series. Michael Myers had been killed off, and the Halloween franchise was intended to have a new story with each film, much like an anthology TV series.
Just watched this. Painfully slow start, but after that, not too bad. More heartwarming than anything else.
I suspect this might have gone over better if they'd changed the names to disconnect it from PSYCHO. (Sort of like the connection between COOGAN'S BLUFF and McCLOUD-- heh.)

"Halloween III" is a very underrated movie. I haven't watched it in awhile. I might have to dig my DVD out.

I think it would've been better if they got rid of all the light, fluffy comedy and made it a serious, straightforward film. I want my doom and gloom.
