And that makes the twist even more unsettling.If things 'fit' together perfectly it can be found out---and that would eliminate the surprise of the twist.I was totally cool with the style,old-time sets and film visuals.Not to mention the macabre intensity building through the whole film.I'd give it a 9/10. I loved it.

Which ‘narrative, timeline, facts etc’ are supposedly ‘unclear’?

Yeah, agreed. Everything fit perfectly time wise. The only issue I had was Margaret Krusemark. She had been intimate with Johnny Favorite. 12 years later a cosmetically changed Harold Angel shows up. She has no clue he is really Johnny Favorite. This was a bit of a stretch IMO.

The rest of it fits just right.
