'Phone Call' object - what was it?

During one scene in the film's second half (in Australia), Mick tells Sue he's "going to make a phone call." He climbs up to the top of a hill and swings a sort of flat, paddle-like object (covered in a woven cloth) on the end of a rope, making a sort of buzzing sound and attracting the attention of animals everywhere - as well as the help of his native friends (and not to mention inciting a humorous story from Wally about the "mating call of the 'Jara-Jara bird.'").

Does anyone have any idea what this object is called? Can they be purchased?

reply

The object is usually referred to as a 'bullroarer' ... but it's also known as a turndun. Do some research into them and you'll find they're very easy to make.

Wow, thanks a lot! I'll definitely look into making one, now!

I remember doing this when I was a kid with a piece of clothesline and a plastic sword.

Don't read this sig.

A piece of string and a wooden ruler was popular when I was in primary school.

If you called a Centaur a "horses ass", would he be offended?
