Elliot's antisemitic remark

I'm not real extreme in my political views, and am not necessarily offended if someone says something that might be politically incorrect (depending on the context). However, in one episode, Elliot makes some remark about how Jews killed our Savior but that he'd forgiven them for that. I'm not sure how the writers expected us to react. He said it in a joking way, but I didn't think it was funny. I'm not Jewish, not religious at all actually, but I still didn't think it was funny.

Elliott is Jewish. He's trying to be funny. He's merely repeating a statement made by an anti-semite OR he's repeating a statement attributed to an anti-semite.

reply

Elliot (the character and the actor playing him, Timothy Busfield) was not Jewish. Only Michael & Melissa were Jewish.

reply

Right. Michael was Jewish, and Elliot was "good-naturedly" ribbing him.

Eliott is a Catholic, however lapsed. This point is made clear during his struggle with faith during Nancy's cancer scare. During that time, it is also mentioned that Nancy was raised as a Lutheran. It has has long been clear that Melissa and Michael are Jewish.
