I came to really like the starting Song - Not Paint it Black. Any1 else?

Although i was majorally disapointed to find that Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones was not the starting song after purchasing Sesaon 1 Boxset, i came to really like the replacment music for the credits a few episodes in.

I was just curious if anybody else felt this way too?

This is probably the longest credits for any television show iv seen with Scrubs having the shortest. However, i felt the music had a good rythm and matched well with the visuals.

i agree, though i was a bit too young to know of the show when it originally aired on tv. i would have loved to hear the real music, but because i never knew it, i have always been a fan of TOD's dvd / rerun music (which was the same)

reply

I always preferred it over Paint It Black...even the first time around.

Never heard the original music, but the theme song is really quite beautiful.

I kinda wished I could have had both. Like every other episode they would switch between PIB and the original music, that would have suited me just fine.

I've never watched the show with the original soundtrack, so the new one's fine with me. I don't really like much 60's music either way.

I think the music is pretty good too, and works well for the show. People are so attached to the 60s hits originally used, but the music now on the DVDs is really alright.

I like it just fine, suits the atmosphere perfectly. I still crave PIB once in a while though, and maybe some Hendrix when they're in the choppers. Otherwise, I love the original music!

The original sound track was epic. The DVD version has like 3 different songs. Paint it Black was way better.

reply

That is the crummy part. LIke for all the romance/flirty scenes they always just play that same saxophone song.

I saw the original when I was in high school, the music from the dvd's is terrible, there are parts when the music is completely wrong, they keep re-using the same tracks for other parts. I wish warner brothers would get their *beep* sorted out. They have changed music for Third Watch DVD's as well. It seems they can't get the rights to use the music sorted.

The opening sequence should always have PIB playing, as it did on tv.

Wow, Terrible is a extremely harsh word. Talking about over biting the bone!

I prefer PIB honestly. I watched this show like clockwork and when the first notes of PIB started playing I knew it was TOD time! My dad and I loved this show...

I think the "I'm disappointed because the 60's music is what made the show" argument I see over and over again may be valid, but it's tiresome. Get over it, folks. Watch the show for the situations, the ensemble cast and the writing - not the background music.

And frankly, I got sick of those 60's hits years ago. I don't miss 'em at all.

The music on the DVD's is just fine, in my opinion. And I have always liked that gentle end credits music. In fact, I put it on a cassette and listened to it back in 1990.

Seasons 1 and 3 are the best... they dorked around with the formula and blew it in season 2.

The replacement soundtrack has nothing like the drive and energy of the original. 'Paint it Black' made the images in the opening sequence jump up and smack you in the face. The replacement is okay.

That they say was due to the writers strike at the time from what I read elsewhere.

Let me see, which music was better. We had the Rolling Stones playing one of the songs that defined the era in Paint it Black. Now they have been replaced by Zamphir, Master of the Pan Flute. Hmm, this is a tough choice! Maybe they can do a special edition of "The Big Chill" with a new soundtrack by Ween.

Seriously, the music in the orginal series was almost like a character. Look at the way the Generation Kill miniseries used music. They used it as an escape to better times. Below is a link to the wikipage, go down to the soundtrack and then tell me that the new music is better.

I've heard both sound tracks and I actually like the DVD Better the tropical theme really suits the locales a lot better IMO. But opinions vary so hey heres to ya, Kiddo!

Can't disagree with Rolling Stones although they are not my cup of tea. I began watching Tour of Duty perhaps in syndication or well into the run of the show but I always remembered that iconic song with the lyrics which came to be known as Paint it Black by the Stones many, many years later. I just acquired the DVD set and immediately thought the music was by The Rippingtons but searching for confirmation was not fruitful.

It sounds almost new age, 80s contemporary jazz. Very cool.

Does anyone know if this show was influenced by Full Metal Jacket or movies like it from that era ? (Hamburger Hill, Platoon, etc).

The starting song IS actually one of the original themes. It was pushed back in favor for Paint it Black when the series started or at least after the pilot according to some fans. You can also tell because the "dvd intro" song plays sporadically throughout the first season in certain scenes even in the Paint it black versions.

When the series was canceled and reruns played at TNT or some other channels, they used the "dvd intro" instead of paint it black because of copyright issues. The same thing happened with the U.S. dvd releases. The start song is good because it is Tour of Duty to begin with. It does sound right when it starts off. Paint it Black is good too don't get me wrong, but I'm glad at least they got the "dvd intro" even if they couldn't get Paint it black.

Personally I couldn't care less what the soundtrack is since the show has such a good plot anyway. I love 60's music but the show is still just as good with the alternate soundtrack in its place.
