What's the Funniest Thing in ToD?

I'm going through season 3 at the moment and out of all the wacky things I've seen on the show, for me the funniest thing is one episode where LT Goldman has an afro, for some reason I thought that was hilarious.

How about anyone else?

Purcell running into the jungle with a roll of toilet paper as pretty funny too!

"What you're feeling now ain't the worst pain. The worst thing is not feeling the hurt anymore."

i remember the afro thing and that was hystarical, but in season three i also like half the stuff that doc says, and there are other little things throughout the series

reply

I remember when a few guys had diareah in the bathroom. Everyone was sick after eating something.

"Welcome di King of di Dancehall!!"

reply

That one was funny!
From season 1 when the guys encounter the Montenyards(mispelled I know) & the big guy from Virginia lives with them. It's so hiliarious when they start performing as James Brown!! That was really silly & you got to see some comedy instead of serious drama all the time. I loved the lite moments on this show.

Remember after Alex died,it was Purcell's birthday & they found Baker again?
There was some sort of behind the scene funny business going on during one shot. It was in the club where Purcell was having his birthday & they were already giggly & then Baker comes in & hands Danny this big container of vitamins! They could hardly contain themselves from laughter...even laughing a little when Purcell tells Baker to leave Goldman alone...Goldman still stunned from Alex's death barely acknowledges Baker! It must have been a long day for the guys & they had to keep shooting that scene & trying to hide the "tired" punch silliness we all get when exhausted!

reply

Yeah. Paradise Lost was a great episode.
All that war paint and those grass skirts LOL.
Taylor singing the lead....

Another funny ep was the one where Baker had diarrhoea out in the bush. He whines and moans to the Lt and asks if he can go back but gets no sympathy whatsoever. Zeke just laughs. finding the whole thing quite amusing. Later on, Baker is dying from the inside out. So he runs off and drops his pants behind some shrubs, meanwhile a frog jumped inside. When he pulled up his pants and felt something jumping around he screamed his head off, and then the vc starting shooting at him. When Zeke comes to his aid, Baker pulls the frog out of his pants and lays into the poor thing with his M16.

Forgot to add that my all time favourite funny moment, has to be in the episode "the Luck" when Anderson and Goldman are sitting inside this cage as POW's and theyre talking about escaping, which wakes up the NVA guard. Frick then urinates on Frack, who was having a midday nap in the grass.
Frack jumps up after being pi**ed on and the two NVA say a few words. Meanwhile Zeke and LT are in absoulute hysterics.

I also giggled myself silly in the episode where Doc Hock is doin like the intro to Star Trek...." Vietnam..land of opportunity...the final frontier...a place to boldly go where no hockenbury has gone before.."
or he says something like that LOL.

Love those things that make you go Mmmmmmm

i loved this show. sgt anderson is hilarious. there is this one episode where a vc squad sneaks into the main camp and starts this big gun fight. then u see sgt anderson jump out of the tent wearing a track suit black pajamas and his rambo bandana lmao

reply

when they get like 15 cherries or newbs or what ever , one of them called bell , and theyre under attack by like 200 vc , and taylor imitates the vc "gi you die , you die! " i thought that was hilarious , and when percell says right after , when i die , bury me face down , taylor says why and percell responds so vietnam can kiss the good ol' wazoo , or soemthing like that

Mine was also from The Luck and I'm paraphrasing, but when Anderson and Goldman, still in the cage, are being fed. Goldman makes a remark about the rice that the old vc woman doesn't like so she spits in his before handing it over to him.

Goldman turns to Anderson and says want to trade mine has sauce.

Deep down, I'm pretty superficial.

reply

I think the funniest thing is the long running bowdlerised swearing. It was so tame it stuck out like a sore thumb. I think "Damn" was even too much for that show, "Dang" is as far as they could get, and don't even *think* about saying "ass" ...

I did love the show, but this aspect of it really made me laugh.

reply

The first episode, Anderson tries to translate a phrase he's encouraged Goldman to shout at the Vietnamese: "I dunno, somethin' about their Mommas."

Cracks me up every time.

reply

Yeah i remember that.
Think it was in Notes from the Underground?
When they were in the tunnels?
Lt was so funny trying to copy Anderson.
He had absolutely no idea what he was saying.
But he yelled it out anyway, coz it sounded so good LOL.

Another funny part for me was in Brothers, Fathers ,Sons when Anderson was tryin to get the goat so he could milk it.
and he whistled it over "C'mere goat" but it didnt come
Johnson says "I dont think it speaks english" lmao
Then Zeke talks to the goat in vietnamese
"Lai dai goat. Lai dai"
That cracked me up big time!

Love those things that make you go Mmmmmmm

Swear words were bad, but they got away with a lot of racial slurs. Also, my personal favourite ;- *hippycommiefagget*

reply

Wow I'm so happy lots more TOD fans me and my mom are addicts.
I'd haft to say I think one of the funniest episodes was " USO DOWN".
When they have those foud suvillians with them.
That whiny sax player always cracks me up whining about his horn and the LT. says "I don't even know who Charlie Parker and I'm getting us out of here if I gotta leave 50 saxaphones behind".
That guy just made the episode funny.
But I also laugh through " Fathers and Sons" when Baker,Sarge and Johnson have that baby up until the baby dies it's quite a funny episode watching them.

DOES NO ONE ELSE HEAR THAT INFERNAL RINGING!?!?!

reply

There's a tiny subtle gag (I can't remember the episode) in which Lt is injured and in a hospital bed. Andersen is talking to him and Alex (kim Delaney) walks in through the door behind him. Lt says 'Hi, beautiful' and Andersen does a double take as he thinks he's saying it to him - a split second later he realises Alex has come in, looks sheepish and excuses himself.

I remember splitting my sides at this gag, it's so well timed by Terrence Knox.

This show had some of the best writing and acting on TV and only the best modern programmes can come close.

One of my favs is in the pilot where Ruiz keeps bragging over how tough he is and then suddenly freaks out when he sees a rat inside the bunker.

Then the entire squad opens up on the rat with their M16s, ending with Ruiz peppering the rat further with his M60. And I'll never forget Johnson's line at that moment: "Take that, you commie rat!"

And the funniest part is, the rat survives!

reply

That scene is very funny - but also poignant as it's a great metaphor for the war in general.

Despite all their numbers and firepower and arrogance, the troops can't kill the rat. After all the shooting, he just crawls out of his hole and carries on.

reply

I like it in the first season, when those people from the USO show get shot down in the chopper, and they are on patrol and taylor is on point. He just see's a woman's legs and he just sits down and throws his helmet down. When asked what he saw he says:

"I saw a white chick, with long legs and boots. I told you the heat would fry my brain, don't put me on point no more sarge."

The way he did that was so funny. They just give him a strange look.
That made me laugh.

Vicky Pollard: Anyway don't listen to her coz everyone knows her fanny goes sideways.

reply

Haven't seen this show in 15 years, but I'll always remember a scene in one of the episodes when Taylor and Ruiz were MIA and they're both really hungry, so Taylor eats a bug. The look on his face when Ruiz reaches into his pocket and takes out two cookies!

When the Sarge, Baker, and Johnson got the infant after the mother died was funny to me. Sarge: Do you guys know anything about babies? Baker: My mama had one once! Sarge: Well, I would hope so, Baker!

That was a funny episode and ended so sadly.

reply

The Afro scene was by far the funniest, IMHO. :D

Other notable scenes are when (Correct me if I'm wrong), Taylor, Doc, and Percel are sitting on the can in the outhouses shooting the shat. Too funny.

reply

One of the funniest scenes was when Goldman was in the bar loaded and couldnt hit the dartboard, then he draws his .45 and starts shooting in the bar.

reply

[deleted]

I was roflmao when LT got the dart caught up in the Vietnamese womans hair LOL.
That to me proved the kind of day Lt was having.

....there were some absolute classic scenes all throughout TOD.
I love a scene in the pilot when Sarge is picking out his replacement troops.
He gets to Baker, who goes on and on about his health food, and his fitness regime until Sarge cant take any more LOL. Sarge asks "Are you from California?"
to which Baker replies "Yeah Anaheim"
"Ok, Step back Mr *beep*
I thought that was hysterical.

reply

also, first episode when ruiz gets freaked out by the rat, and they all proceed to shoot it, i thought it was killer hahaha

reply

I love that scene too. Lots of funny bits. But is it just me? But everytime the Lt shouts an order his voice squeaks or cracks... It just cracks me up. Like being bossed by a mouse...

reply

He probably damaged his vocal chords, caused nodules to form from yelling over the noise of the choppers LOL.

reply

Probably.... :)
I love it thought it makes it more real some how.

I feel like it is going to happen to me. If I yell calm down again after being awake for over 49 hrs.

Another funny bit is in Episode 2 First Season when the Lt freaks over the snake when he is down in the tunnel.

Oh and the episode when the woman reporter <Vicky> goes out with them in the field. And before the mission all the guys get cleaned up and covered in aftershave. And the Sargent tells them off.

and usually in any episode when ever any of the guys see a woman<doesn't matter what they are in the middle of> the pure look of lust and smouldering that washes over them is a crack up to me.

He sounds like James Stewart when He shouts

"How do you know my name..?"
..."It's stenciled on the back of your shorts". {"\ (*_*) /"}

The episode where Johnson goes home has a funny line at the end. Taylor and Johnson do their ridiculously long-fancy hand shake thing the night before he leaves, and right after purcel says while on the verg of laughing, 'just like I showed ya...'

And in season three again, the episode where they have to go snatch some south vietnemeses commaders wife (I know I can't spell) and they find out that she can talk english and sarge says, 'you speak english pretty good their lady.' And she quickley squrits back 'and you do not!' and sarge is kinda stunned for a second.

reply

Hey if you guys want to see funny then you should try and get your hands on the blooper real. Absolutely hilarious!

There is a scene where Sgt Anderson stands up during the filming of “And make death proud to take us” and starts doing an absolute gut-busting song and dance routine!

Then we get a scene during “roadrunner” where Sarge tells LT that they should check out the paddy before they cross it, and LT turns and says something like “ Nah we can’t wait. We’re on a schedule. Lets just send the negro’s!” and the zoom in on Taylor and Johnson as they burst into laughter!

Goldman's afro scene was pretty funny. Also, when Goldman first comes to his quarters after McKay moves in and shoots a line in the floor to establish sides, that was pretty funny.

Stop the Bat wars. Burton and Nolan have no beef, why should their fans?

reply

Where is this gag reel? I've never seen one.

Cheers mate!

There are so many funny and especially subtlely funny scenes. One of the good ones is from ep 3.15 - The Road to Long Binh, where Roo, Taylor, Danny, and Doc had contracted food poisoning from the bad sweet and sour pork from last night's dinner in the mess hall, and there is the scene where they are sitting in a row of latrines chatting while Danny was impatiently waiting. I thought it was so incredibly funny but also showed how close these guys were:

Ruiz: What kind of guy deserts his buddies?

Taylor: A coward!

Doc Hock: C'mon, Marcus. You're the guy all the time tellin' us we ought not to be jumpin' to conclusions

Taylor: And I'm right! But a deserter's a deserter...

Percell: [rushes over and notices all the latrines are occupied] Aww! Well, hurry up!

Ruiz: You know, if there was a guy thinking about deserting in our unit, I'd rather have him step forward and go home.

Taylor: What?!

Ruiz: Well, better that than in the middle of a fre fight when he's supposed to be watching my back.

Percell: Look, one of you guys has got to hurry, 'k?

Taylor: Once second, Danny! You know Roo, you have a point there, man. Take Doc here - Doc might be a...a...a squirrelly, little, long-haired,...a... red-neck pinko conshie medic but I know he wouldn't desert me in battle.

Doc Hock: Thank you.

Danny: [steals toilet paper and runs off into the grass] Awww, hell!

Doc Hock: Danny, come back here with... that.

There's another very funny scene between Taylor, Zeke and Johnson while out on an S&D patrol in ep 1.13 USO Down. The teasing and joking among the men, especially by Zeke, is always great:

Taylor: Man, my whole body turnin' into one big fungus - my 'hind, my knees, my armpits, my crotch. Stuff's still spreading, gonna turn me all green.

Johnson: Well look at it like this, Marcus, at least there's less prejudice against green people back in the world.

Taylor: Man, I got 45 days and a wake up. I can't go home, my skin flakin' off me, smelling like I been dead for two weeks!

Johnson: Ain't anybody gonna know you anyway

Taylor: [Scoffs] Those girls back home dying there wanting for me. Coz I'm the trash talker, the woman stalker, the booty shaker and the baby maker.

[Johnson rolls his eyes; Zeke walks over and sits behind Taylor]

Zeke: Well now, well now, just makes my heart leap with joy to hear another poet celebrating another morning in the bush.

Taylor: Glad somebody's happy.

Zeke: Well, tell you what Taylor - I'm cold, I'm wet, I'm hungry, I'm tried, dirty and I stink! That's everything a good rifleman lives for, hey Johnson...

[Johnson smiles]

Taylor: You forgot ugly...

Zeke: No I didn't [grins mischievously]

[Taylor turns his head to Zeke and looks worried; Johnson laughs]

Zeke: You guys ready to move your tails down the trail?
...
Zeke: Since you're so glib all this morning, I'm gonna let you take point.

This scene cracks me up every time.

Season 3: everybody's got the trots, so Lt. Goldman and Sgt. Zeke Anderson get sent on chaser detail to deliver a soldier to a stockade. They stop on the way for dinner and talk about Johnson's letter he wrote, talking about college and thinking about growing out an afro hairdo. LT. says he's thinking about growing out a fro, then Zeke pictures him with one, showing Goldman's fro. I can't remember the line, but Zeke told him that would be an awful look. Hilarious moment when the camera cuts to Zeke listening to LT., then back to afro LT., then back to Zeke commenting. It's still hilarious!

Wounded soldier: Don't quit your day job.😊
