S1 E1 View from the helicopter onto the Firebase


When Anderson takes off to the Chu Lai Headquarters, he - and we - look back onto the Firebase Ladybird. In this picture you can see two gigantic holes. Are we supposed to think this would be the effect of the nighttime assault, of bombs or grenades or whatever? The holes are much too big for that, they are rather like the caldera of a volcano. So what is it with these huge holes?

The whole firebase seems to consist merely of these two giant holes. Later in the episode, when the convoi arrives at the firebase (at 21:26 of the link above), those two giant holes aren't no longer there.
