Okay, I don't get it...

When this show was on the air I was too young to really understand, but now I'm confused. Which one of the guys was Nicole's father? Why didn't they ever just do a paternity test? And plus the plot makes no sense, I mean why would a judge put a child in the custody of two single men? I can maybe understand it if they were gay but I knew they weren't, I can remember them having girlfriends. Does anyone know?

OK, I haven't seen this TV show for quite a few years now, so my memory may be a little sketchy.

The two dads DID do a paternity test in one of the later seasons, but I think when they got the results back (by way of a letter) they destroyed it without opening it. They had realised (all 3 main characters) that if Nicole found out who her true dad was it would very likely have a detrimental effect on everyone's relationship with each other.

As for your other question - I'm not sure. I think the initial set-up of Nicole living with her two dads was meant to be temporary, but as time went on everyone just realised (including "the judge"!) that it was the best thing for her. Her dads were the most stable thing in her life, whereas their many girlfriends would simply come and go.

I used to really like this series when it was shown on TV. I'm not sure how it has aged now, but would still love to see a DVD release of it (though unfortunately thats very unlikely).

Thanks for the info, but don't be so sure about it not coming on DVD, I mean nowadays EVERYTHING is coming on DVD!

Like the previous poster stated the show was about two single fathers who find out that one of them or both of them could possibly be the father of Nicole. Now I do remember that they did have a praternity test done but neither one of the fathers really wanted to know who was the dad because they felt that things were great the way it was.

Well who knows when they are going to put this out on DVD because there are shows that were on during the 80's that came out several years before My Two Dads and I am still waiting for them to come out on DVD but I have not seen them yet though.

Good news, Crawler, My Two Dads is coming to DVD on March 3, 2009. I loved that show. Paul Reiser was hilarious. Dick Butkus was hilarious. Florence Stanley was also hilarious. Can't wait to see it again after so many years.

USA used to run it early in the morning, but that was about 10 years ago (has it really been than long? OMG).

For most of the 80s, DNA paternity tests that were 99.99% accurate (or anywhere close to that) were just not available to the average member of the public. It may be that the technology for these tests didn't even exist during the early part of the decade, and even if the technology existed by the show's premiere in 1987, it just wasn't widely available. There were some less accurate tests available, but it was quite possible that these would produce inconclusive results -- that is, test results might not exclude either of two possible fathers so even if you did have the test done, you still might not know who the father was. TV shows back then (especially soap operas) would frequently incorporate this potential for inconclusive answers into their plots.

Anyway, while the show had kind of a dumb premise, it was not so utterly clueless as it would have been even by the early 90s, when you could just call up the 800-number on a "Who's the father?" billboard and order a paternity test that would give you a definite answer to that question.
