The Fox sitcom has usually been called misogynistic, but a new video essay shows how it took "a nuanced but forward-thinking" approach to gay marriage nearly three decades ago.
Al, being a high school football athlete and a "he man", was hardly one to understand two men being more than friends, but when Al finds out that Pete (gay) cooks, cleans, works for good salary, and loves sports, Al proclaims his "love" for him. Of course, Al is kidding... or is he?
Castellanetta was brilliant in this. One of my favorite episodes.
I mentioned a post about that episode on the old IMDB board a few years ago. Boy was that episode a hilarious shock for TV audiences back in the day?! Remember when Pete stated there were no dishes, and Al turned the dog Buck's dish around and showed his pal his name was on the other side. I really cracked up! OMG, can you believe the 90's were almost 30 years ago, Gen X is getting old, I'm one of them myself.
That was a good episode. I think Al understood it was about a partnership and because of the nature of his relationship withh Peggie, he could appreciate it more.
It’s not that surprising if you were anything older than an infant in the 90s (not saying that OP wasn’t, just responding to the article).
For most people who grew up in the 90s, it’s more surprising or cute that millennials think they invented mainstream LGBTQ acceptance. If you were raised on a dose of MWC, The Drew Carey Show, and Seinfeld, you’re probably way more progressive than the devolved angry attitudes that are prevalent in 2019.
