My list of messed up/stupid things about Married with Children

1. The addition of Seven was a dreadful decision by the producers/writers. Not only was it a clichéd attempt to add fresh momentum to the show and new plot lines via a new character, but Seven was terrible as such a vehicle. He was about as useless as Maggie on the Simpsons as far as being interesting and plot generation. He essentially just got in the way.

This is also what happened when another show tried this clichéd tactic. The Fresh Prince of Bel-air did this with Nicki.

2. They insulted Al repeatedly and heavily for how little he made in income. I recall even Al ragged on himself about it(via self-pity and mentioning he was broke when the kids wanted money or presents), yet he was able to take care of three people, have a car, a computer, a dog and a two story house. Just stupid.

3. Peggy was an extremely beautiful woman yet this is logically stupid because she was presented as sitting around all day eating bon-bon's, doing no housework and in one episode with Jim Jupiter, she was shown to be very averse to exercise, so logically she should have been a fat pig.

4. They acted like Bud was an ugly gargoyle, when he was actually very handsome.

5. It was an extremely stupid decision by the producers/writers to write Katey Sagal's pregnancy into the show. Then even more stupid to make Marcy pregnant at the same time. All they had to do was make some excuse for why she was away. Like say she was visiting relatives in Wanker county, like I think they ended up doing later on for some reason or other(probably because Sagal got pregnant again)

6. It was real messed up how the show viciously, viciously made fun of shoe salesmen. As far as I am aware, they never explained what's so bad about being a shoe salesman other than specifically with Al, he sold shoes to fat women(which even that wasn't always the case like with the shoe groupie).

Even worse, Al wasn't just a shoe salesman. He was actually the store manager!

7. It was stupid and amazingly self-indulgent for the producers to let Amanda Bearse play both Marcy and her identical cousin who is a lesbian. Even more ridiculous given that Amanda Bearse really was a lesbian.

8. It was messed up how Al would beat up Kelly's boyfriends for no reason. And then he always won as if it was automatically the case a forty year old man could really beat up twentysomethings that easily. Not to mention his behavior was illegal assault.

9. It was very weird how they insisted on giving Al an African-American co-worker/friend. They did it three times, finally landing on Griff. Before that it was some dude I cant remember(I think his name was Dexter) and of course Aaron.

One wonders why the powers that be on the show were so insistent on doing that, and why It didn't work out with Dexter and Aaron.

10. It was messed up how Al claimed Marcy had no breasts when she actually did have fairly decent sized ones. She looked to be rocking a (B) or even C-cup as was shown several times when Amanda was scantily clad.

11. It was messed up how Christina Applegate refused to date any African American males(nor Middle-Eastern or Asian), but was willing to go out with the scuzziest, nastiest, drugged up losers as long as they were white. I think all her dates were white males other than one Hispanic named Carlos.

I would say in my view that Applegate was likely racist but it's her business if she wants to date only her own race. You can't tell people who they are to be attracted to. But it was messed up how her character refused to have anything to do with Aaron, who was very handsome and respectable, but she was willing to go out with guys that were drugged up criminals or hooligans. I often wonder if the producers refused to have her date African-American males(as well as no Asians or Middle-Easteners) or if she demanded that be the case from the producers or whoever was in charge there.

Although to be fair, David Faustino never had an Afro-American girlfriend either(or any other race but Hispanic)as far as I know, but at least he dated high, high quality girls who weren't trash.

Yes, there are a few stupid things about MWC, such as your post.

reply

The one thing I would say that annoyed me on the show was the insertion of characters from their ucoming sitcoms such as top of the heap which was a horrible MWC episode.

BOB SAGEEETTTTT!!!!! - Tourettes Guy

reply

that was so stupid.
i hated that garbage.. and Joey can't act to save his life.

reply

1 - The worst thing about Seven was the horrible actor they picked to play him.

2 - The house was built on an ancient Indian moccasin dump. Probably got a good deal.

4 - Yeah, he was such a stud that he had a bedroom full of rubber women.

3 - Wanker women don't balloon up until later in life.

5 - Nothing stupid about wanting to keep one of the main characters on the show.

6 - They never said what was so bad about being a shoe salesman? Did you miss all the feet episodes?

7 - It was a perfect solution for Bearse to play both roles. Therein lies the humor of Al being attracted to her.

8 - It was well established that Bundys, and Al especially, are brawlers. Kelly's boyfriends were all losers.

9 - What a stupid thing to bitch about.

10 - The only time Al went to the Jiggly Room was on DD nights. To him, Marcy's small boobs were basically non-existent.

11 - Christina Applegate didn't refuse to date anyone. She is an actress playing Kelly. Also, why don't you think she is a homophobe for not dating girls? It's the same thing. She, and everybody else in the world has a type. It's not racist to only date a certain color or race. Plus, she had multiple dates nearly every night of the week and we only saw a tiny fraction of them. How do you know what color they were?

I suggest you watch something else. All your complaints are stupid.

Nice retorts. That list of complaints was just awful

reply

Forever Royal here!!!! Been a fan for over 30 years.

I always wondered who cleaned the Bundy's house. If Peg did nothing, did Al come home and do it? The bed was always made. They occasionally had food, but somehow that got cleaned up.

@TwominutestoMidnight

The worst thing about Seven was the horrible actor they picked to play him.

You give no reason why the actor who played Seven was horrible. So that can be dismissed out of hand.

The house was built on an ancient Indian moccasin dump. Probably got a good deal.

This was a poor response, as it only addressed one of my points. It left out the car, taking care of three other people, the computer, and the dog.

Yeah, he was such a stud that he had a bedroom full of rubber women.

The above was a stupid response known as the fallacy of ignoratio elenchi. It was an irrelevant response since I never said he was a stud. I just said he was handsome, but they acted like he was an ugly gargoyle.

Nothing stupid about wanting to keep one of the main characters on the show

It was stupid. You don't make changes to the reality of the show, because of changes in real life to the actors that play the characters. Then it was stupid because the family went through all they went through, just to write it off as a dream.

They could easily have written a main character off. Producers do it all the time. Chrissy was written off Three's Company. The first mom on the Fresh Prince of Bel-air was written off. Hell, Fred Sanford(Redd Foxx) was written off his own show for awhile.

Wanker women don't balloon up until later in life

So I guess wanker county imbues them with magical powers of not being fat when they should be, until they reach some arbitrary age of what constitutes "later in life" (Rolls eyes)

It was a perfect solution for Bearse to play both roles. Therein lies the humor of Al being attracted to her

It was not a perfect solution. You can't have a solution to that which is not a problem to begin with. So your comment didn't address anything I said there.

It's stupid to have an identical cousin who is a lesbian, played by a real life lesbian. There is no valid reason to do this other than to indulge Amanda Bearse's real life lesbianism, on the show itself.

It was well established that Bundys, and Al especially, are brawlers. Kelly's boyfriends were all losers

This response above was worthless, as it answered nothing I said.

What a stupid thing to bitch about

Worthless response. Just a bare assertion fallacy.

The only time Al went to the Jiggly Room was on DD nights. To him, Marcy's small boobs were basically non-existent.

Then that would be extremely stupid logic on Al's part. A woman has non-existent breasts if they are not Double (D)'s? LOL!

Also, why don't you think she is a homophobe for not dating girls? It's the same thing.

This was a stupid response. It's not the same thing. A homophobe makes negative discriminations based on the fact that the person is a homosexual. A heterosexual is not refusing to date their own gender because they hate homosexuals. They are refusing to date them because they are not homosexual.

In other words, she didn't refuse to date homosexuals because they are gay, but because she wasn't gay.

It's not racist to only date a certain color or race
.

Sure it is, if the reason you are not dating other races is specifically because of their race. Based on what was seen, Applegate(or the producers) was most likely racist. The giveaway on this is her refusal to date any other race but white(if you exclude Carlos or whatever his name was), but then also dating hooligans, criminals and rapscallions.

You're willing to date such riff-raff dregs, but not go near any other race? Come on now. That's a dead giveaway.

You're still an idiot.

Someone who lacks the mental discipline and intellect to read something because it's too long(the very essence of mental laziness and dimwittery) calling someone else an idiot.

Talk about self-pwnage. LOL!

I read you entire OP and responded to each claim. You got buthurt and posted a bunch of nonsense which I skimmed and determined was not worth another point by point reply. Cry more.

Translation: My ignorant response got tore the hell up, and I am too much of an intellectual coward to face the music and deal with it head on, so I will run like Oscar De La Hoya vs Felix Trinidad, but smokescreen the excuse that it's not worth another point by point reply, to save face. LOL!

Ah, Ad populum fallacy now. You don't have an education in logic do you?

reply

This was a poor response, as it only addressed one of my points. It left out the car, taking care of three other people, the computer, and the dog.

Well, the car was a 1973 wreck. I actually owned a 1973 wreck in 1987 with practically no income. No big feat.

The computer? You mean the one Peggy bought? The one Marcy offered $30 for? No big feat.

Dogs aren't necessarily a feat, either.

I'm not sure if I understand your comment correctly as it is vague, and if I have it right, you are a piece of garbage; But if I understand correctly, did you really just go out of your way to post a worthless spam comment, whereby you are expressing inexplicable and bizarre amazement that I am still commenting on my own thread, and a thread that is not even a month old, and where you're calling me an it as if I'm not a human being?

reply

You have to realize that this show was supposed to be an anti-Cosby sitcom, where father didn't know best and Al would only hug his kids if they were bleeding. You aren't supposed to take the show very seriously, since there were injuries that characters survived with no problems.

Here are my responses to your notes:
1. Seven was another attempt to add a third kid to the show and make Al's life more miserable. There wasn't much they could do with Seven, so he was written out eventually.
2. Yeah, Al doesn't make a lot of money, yet he has a house and car. The thing is: Those things were considered junk by most.
3. Peggy took care of herself in other ways, I suppose.
4. Bud didn't look too bad, although some of his hairstyles I could do without.
5. They wrote the pregnancy of Katy's into the show at the time because they thought they could add another child to Al's hellish life. When she miscarried, they decided to make it all a dream of Al's to put it behind them. In later years, Katy didn't want to have it written into the show again and they accepted that.
6. The idea was to show someone at a job who isn't treated well by customers, yet isn't supposed to get angry with them. Al's insults come from having to deal with stupid, fat women who apparently can't accept a bigger size shoe for their big feet.
7. I had no problem with Amanda playing her cousin Mandy and her being a lesbian. Funny episode.
8. Al would beat them up when he saw them making out with Kelly because he was always trying to protect her innocence, even though she was a tramp for a long time. He just denied it.
9. They decided to add a black person to help Al because they just thought it was a good idea. They started with Aaron, who I think was too young, then Dexter came in as a temp and then sort of used a similar person like Griff the following season. It was better to have an older person, I'll admit that.
10. To Al, he liked big breasts on women, not the small ones Marcy had.
11. Who cares about Kelly only dating whites? Maybe that's what she liked best.

reply

Most messed up thing was Al thinking his wife was ugly and not liking her body! Now that's messed up :)

reply

I agree with 'most' of your points, although I don't think they were stupid. I think they tried to show a stereotypical not-so-well-off American family.

I will very much agree with your point about Bud though. It just didn't make sense that he was shown as being rejected all the time.

One more point I noticed is that there is hardly any episode that ends in Al's or Bud's favour. I think, up to mid-season 10, there were two episodes that were overall good for Bud: the one where he goes into this competition where he has to give answers to some questions to win a holiday with a girl, and the one where Amber comes for the first time.

For Al, can't remember a good episode besides the one where he won a race.

A good death is its own reward
