Katey Sagal missing from a bunch of episodes but...

Anyone know why on IMDB it says that Ed and Katey were both in 263 episodes but I've just watched at least five episodes in a row (season 10) where Peggy has yet to make an appearance...weird

Katey was pregnant and also had a miscarriage during the season that's why she disappeared from the show for a bit.

reply

She still recieved credit in the opening titles, sometimes IMDB lists that.

didn't they say she was traveling or something? I recall quite a few episodes where her only scenes were through a phone call to Al. Apparently Ed O Neil is the only actor who was in every episode. I just finished watching up to season 6 and so far the main 4 have been in each episode. I can't recall one without Bud or Kelly

reply

Al was the only primary cast member featured in that spinoff episode featuring Matt Le Blanc. I think that was in Season 5 but not 100% certain. But anywho, Al was indeed the only one to appear in every episode.

reply

That was an attempt at a spin-off. Fortunately, it didn't take.

reply

David Faustino and Christine Applegate are both missing from "The Poker Game" in season one, as well as "Top of the Heap" from season five (although they both appear in episodes of the spinoff series). Christine Applegate is also missing in "Buck Can Do It" and "Master the Possibilites" from season two.

@zypherix - your signature line is why atheists have such a hard time. Stop with the condescending BS, grow up, and let people live their own lives.

reply

the amount of evangelizing that comes from Christians versus atheists must be a ratio of 10,000:1. But, I agree, no one needs that *beep* on either end

The only "condescending BS" is yours.

The people you idolize wouldn't like you.

reply

David and Christina also both wherent in the original first episode (they replaced those actors and its one hell of a weird watch if you ever get the chance)

reply

I have what "claims" to be the pilot episode on the season 1 dvd and it is Applegate and Faustino... tho they look so young its a little hard to recognize them.

Is there possibly an "unaired pilot" that you are referring to?

reply

Sorry saw your reply much to late. Yes there was an original Pilot that was later recast and then reshot. Utterly weird to watch.

Katey was pregnant and also had a miscarriage during the season that's why she disappeared from the show for a bit.

She didn't have a "miscarriage", she had a stillbirth. A miscarriage is a pregnancy that unexpectedly ends before the 20th week (5 months). Katey was 7 months pregnant and underwent an emergency Caesarean section (C-section). Her daughter didn't survive and was stillborn.

reply

And some of those episode she didn't appear in, she did call and her voice was used.

reply

I recall she was pregnant and miscarried during season 5. :( (The show was crude, but the cast and viewers weren't as people felt sorry for her loss. Why people thought she as a person was bad just because she's an actress playing a role... :( Not the same thing, folks...)

In seasons 6, 9, and 10 she was on limited work duty as she was building her family, hence being absent or limited to brief phone call cameos.

reply

I really liked how they made her pregnancy just a dream after she miscarried. I personally thought that was really nice of them.

reply

I thought they handled it better than Cheers, who acted like it didn't even exist.

I thought it was S10 --- someone mentions S5 - Sagal was preggers - so they had Marcy preg also ..... which demonstrates the heart of the show / regardless of the harsh humor: they had MANY shows scripted for babies... OOPS - "Life" happened.

SO - the writers had to totally TOSS ALL and rewrite - hence "No MAAM" --- was lame - but given time limits, etc... what u gonna do?

Just a mistake by IMDB. Because she miscarried the birth they incorporated into the show and it was a painful experience to go through publicly she went through the others in private.

reply

If an actor/actress is credited in the opening credits, it counts, even if they don't appear. This might not be applied consistently.

Ed/Al was in every episode, yes, although he's only in about five minutes (total) of the episode "Sofa So Good", with most of his lines being delivered off screen.
On screen time is only about three minutes. Peggy's is about five minutes, Jefferson is about two minutes, and Marcy isn't in it at all.

Bud and Kelly, however, are pretty much onscreen during the entire episode, save for Kelly a few minutes at the beginning and Bud a few minutes near the end.

reply

It must be a mistake. Katey was out of a couple of episodes that season due to a pregnancy. She did first make appearances by calling the house and we see her in a cab, but then stopped that crap.

reply

Was Al in the one about the radio station?

reply

You mean Radio Free Trumaine? Yes, he appeared at the beginning.
