The cats in the cradle episode

Ron makes a bet with 2 white guys on Hillman losing a football game. Hillman does win the guys do pay up on losing but not without being rude.
Then things turn serious two of the guys write NI on his car Ron with eventually Dwayne get into a fight with the boys.

I don't condone racism or violence but 1. Ron did'nt have to take advantage of the boys not knowing the point spread. 2. He almost makes a racist comment first by claiming "the other team needs more blacks".

Yes I am white this is simply an observation I have nothing against anyone of any race.

Those guys still had no right to spray paint Ron's car! Why would you bet on a game if there is a possibility that you might lose?

reply

I realize it may seem I'm supporting the boys who spray painted Ron's car on the contrary.
Ron could have just collected his money and not make the statement "You boys need more blacks on your team" and suggest blacks are superior.
The boys could have also walked away and not spray painted his car.
Both sides as I see it are wrong not only 1
I'm no gambler but I think there may be a few places and or towns that gamblers frequent La$ Vegas and Alantic City of the more noteables.

reply

Saying a team needs more blacks isn't necessarily prejudice.

However, spraying nig*** on a car is racist.

reply

True on both points, However instead of "your school needs more blacks". How about your school needs better athletes or better trained athletes?

That was the whole point of the cop character setting both sets of guys straight. He even tells Ron something like "Oh, you don't see your part in all of this do you" "No, I'm the victim" "Maybe you need more brothers in the backfield," It went something like that. You're right that Ron wasn't completely innocent in the situation and obviously the white guys did antagonize him earlier and after the game.

reply

Did you even watch the episode? That was the whole point. They made it obvious that Ron and his aggressive attitude played a part in it as well. This is why in his version of events, he pretended like he didn't make the "you need more brothers on your team" comment. The cop even told him he shouldn't have provoked them.

reply

The ultimate point of the episode is two wrongs don't make a right and never judge a book by its cover.

There was also a point that if you notice the spray paint on Ron's car at the end of the episode was half white and the rest was sprayed in black.

reply

Now that I watch it again, that one white guy in the black jacket really started off also with his snide backhanded remarks. He keeps it up throughout the episode, its guys like that that always want to stir the pot and keep the animosity going.

This was a very serious episode but I didn't like seeing my favorite Clark Kent as a dirt bag. I loved the cop because he told them all the truth. Both sides were wrong.

reply

I know right I love Dean Cain but I hated how he was in this episode as well. I think it was Ron fault he did egg them on after the game but like the one post said they didn't have to write the N word on Ron car.

reply

True, both sides weren't innocent, but one side was definitely more wrong. And their punishment should have been harsher.

"Do you even remember what you came here to find?"

reply

It scared me that they put the letters Nig on the car and someone finished writing it on the car. Why can't we all just get along

reply

This was my absolute favorite episode and the more wrong side's punishment was harsher. First they had to pay to repair Ron's car. Second, the cop said he was going to call Hillman and see if they had any buildings that needed a fresh coat of paint since they were so good with paint.
I loved the ending where they all left and saw that someone had completed the graffiti and finally it seemed to dawn on Dean Cains character how despicable their act was. When he said "see you next Saturday" to Ron and Dwayne for the first time addressing them without any contempt, it had that element of hope that maybe people can change.

reply

"but one side was definitely more wrong"

The racial politics in this episode bothered me for precisely this reason. The episode suggests that Ron's behavior is partially to blame for the racist behavior of the white students, and that's really effed up. I also didn't like the white cop being positioned as the voice-of-reason given that black people have been terrorized by racist cops for years. Assuming, as Dwayne did, the worst about cops isn't a form of prejudice, it's a form of survival. There are certain things we as black people know we can't say and do; certain things we can't expect (i.e., support) when it comes to cops.

reply

I agree with everything you said.

I agree with everything "shorthairdontcare" said. The racial dynamics are unbalanced. Ron saying the team needs more brothas is not comparable to the white guys spray painting the n word on his car sheesh!

reply

I was thinking the whole episode that Ron got himself in that situation to an extent. Yes, those boys were classless and racist, but Ron needed to just take the high road after they gave him his money. Instead, he gloated and said, "You guys could use more black people on your team" which is just as bad as the stuff those boys said. That was what prompted them to spray-paint Ron's car.

I like how the officer later pointed that out, because while I like Ron most of the time, he gets himself into situations he should be smart enough to know how to avoid.

reply

As another poster said, this was one of my favorite as well. It really gave a close look at how racism can from someone of ANY race. First off, Ron was being a condescending jackass and made racist comment saying "your team could use a few brothers(meaning Black males)" or something to that affect which the other guys to start talking trash. He was dead-wrong for saying it, PERIOD! Those other guys were had NO right to spray paint on his car. They could've simply walked away from the situation just like Ron should've just took the money and kept his damn shut. Both parties were punished, justifiably so. During the when Ron and Dwayne came of outside, the letters "gger" were added to the "ni" spelling out the word "n****r". I really like this part because it shows how racists are everywhere. It was pretty obvious that those other guys couldn't have done it because they were still inside. Very powerful episode!
