Why did they change Whitley's character during Season 3?

So I'm watching A Different World on Netflix and I noticed they changed the Whitley's character during Season 3. They changed her voice, talents and personality. Season 2 Whitley could dance, sing and STEP. I'm watching Season 3 and now she is off beat while dancing and singing with the dean. And why did they think it was funny to change her voice? WHY DID THEY CHANGE HER?

I remember in a later season her dancing a bit I think. It was sprog ably for the laughs. But I juts choose to associate her with a ridiculous personality but a lot of talent
