"Love Taps" Episode

SPOILER ALERT: IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS EPISODE, DON'T READ THIS.
This was another one of my favorite episodes. Gina is dating this wannabe dickhead rapper named "I Down" Deon who starts beating her. Freddie witnessed an incident between Gina and Deon but is unaware who the couple actually was at the time. Lena later finds out and tries to talk Gina out of that relationship but it falls on deaf ears. After speaking to a couple of other people, Gina finally realizes that she deserves better and decides to leave Deon. I really like this episode because Gina was always know for being this "don't take no mess" kind of girl and seeing this character portrayed in this way shows that this kind of situation can happen to ANYONE.

JUST watched this episode last night on Netflx. And I thought it was excellent the scene that really moved me the most was when Freddie was doing her radio show and she said the poem by Pat Parker, I thought it was so real and still very relevant in today's society...

I’m no genius,

that system

I can't stand Gina, but I didn't want her to be that roach's (aka, "Down") punching bag.

I love that poem also, very deep. Anyways, I couldn't stand Gina either I hated to see her get beat.

reply

Why the Gina hate? I didn't think she was around enough to "dislike" I thought she was a funny side character and always had great one liners!

reply

I love when she sings "when the saints go marching in".

I've hated her ever since her ignorance in the Tisha Campbell episode about AIDS, and I never liked her since.

I really didn't start disliking Gina until the episode where she tapes that "Digit Ho" sign on the back of Charmaine and let Terrell take the fall for it. I know that happened after she dumped Deon. But even before then I always thought she was an annoying character but I didn't dislike her. I hated that she was being beaten by that idiot and felt bad for her.

I loved that episode and I also love the way the show always portrays real life issues despite being a sitcom. Only thing I hated about it though was the fact that they made the guy a rapper. Just like how they had to make the guy who tried to rape Freddie a jock. I can't stand those stereotypes.

Oh yeah I didn't think about it like that, it made it seem like jocks and rappers are rapist.

reply

You know, I think that was done purposely given the time. I think it was meant to show at least with Garth the difficulty in believing someone that was as hot and talented as he was would ever rape someone because he would have nooo problem pulling women.with Deon it was a little more obvious because he rapped about what he did and tried to pass it off as just lyrics.

reply

That's the thing though. During that time period, when shows did the date rape storyline it's always some hot, popular jock who does it.

IKR! I totally agree! Why couldn't he just be like a engineer student or something?! And the same thing with the guy who tried to rape Freddie.

I agree, but I also think that they did it on purpose. I think they were trying to combat the idea that someone who was that popular, successful, desired, etc. wouldn't "need" to rape a woman.

I enjoy this episode as well. I especially love when the groupie goes up to I'm Down and says whatever she says about him dedicating a song to her. His damn, Terrence's damn while looking at her but is so funny but then when Ron backs in and the assumption is he just finished looking at her but and says Damn as well, lawwwwwdddd that part cracks me up every time.
