Amerika ...the Novel

I recently purchased the book "Amerika" on Ebay. It is intresting some of the things added in the book that are left out in the movie. For example, the book begans with a brief explantion as to how the Soviets invaded the usa:

"The Key, then, was to attack and disable the communication systems among the targets, thereby crippling the entire system.

High in the stratospher above Ameria, four enormous nuclear devices were detonated. On earth, the explosions were heard only as a low rumble. No one was hurt by the blasts, nor did they generate a dangerous amount of fallout; no one even felt the consussive power of the bombs. But the explosions were "felt" by every computer circuit, every telephone line, every banking system, and every electrical plant from Main to San Diego. The detonations created a vast electro-magnectic pulse (EMP) that was like a hundred thousand bursts of lighting focused insidiously on America's netrvous system. Vast stores of computer memory were instantly erased. The coils of electric generators sizzled and sized. Telephones went dead. The age of communications eneded in a millisecond, and with it ended America's military, political and econocmic hegemony.

The conquest of America, incredibly, had been effected without taking a single life. American missiles stood unharmed in their silos, but couldnt not be activated. Around the world, American forces, their ranks undiminished, were at the ready, but could not be issued orders. In Washington, the American president was given an agonizing and humiliating choice: surrender and agree to unilateral disarment, the virtual destruction of the dollar, and the essential end of national sovereignty; or resist, fight back with whatever sundered forces could be mustered, and face certain annihilation..."

Well we know what happens next. The book is intresting... it details more about the relationship between Devin and Amanda before she married Peter... in which the book details ever so nicely how Amanda gave her virginity to Devin, despite Peter waiting patienly for 2 and half years for "it"... poor Peter "lol". Anways, I am about 1/3rd the way through the book. It follows very closely the script of the movie, but with added material that is left out in the movie... in addition it goes into more detail about Devin's run for President in 1992 and it explains more about the "transition" period between 1992 to 1997. Thus, I think the book makes for some good reading if you are really into this movie. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with me. The book can easily be purchased on Ebay.

I did a Amazon (and eBay) search for the novelization of Amerika... but only came up with the Franz Kafka novel of the same title, which didn't seem right to me. Does anyone know the author of the novelization of the miniseries?

reply

Micahbrwn, if you don't have it already, look for the authors "Brauna E. Pouns" and "Donald Wrye". I got my copy from Alibris.com; it's a good place for older books.

To tgs333:

Amanda gives her virginity to Devin because Peter Bradford, who represents your she-male superhero, George W. Bush, is a CLOSET CASE *beep* ;-(

To Micahbrwn:

Don't bother with ebay. Go down to your local used book store and look under 'Political Thrillers'. If they have it, it'll probably cost you all of 25 cents. That's what I paid for my copy. If they don't have it in that section, 'Movie Tie-Ins' is another possiblity.

All it is is a pos trade paperback, and only a blithering idiot or neo-con (but, of course, I repeat myself) would throw away good money on something like that. ;-D

The problem is that some terrorist group operating under the protection of a sponsor country like North Korea, China, and Syria (obviously no longer Iraq since Saddam is gone, and that very real option is gone. Some day historians will be able to understand the simplicity of the need of that action) will be able to do what the book says can happen.

Once that happens, it will be the end of the U.S. The economy will evaporate and we will be finished.

American missle silos (as well as many other military installations) are hardened against an EMP attack of this sort. If the Ruskies (or any other nation) tried this in real life, it would have triggered a nuclear counterattack.

reply

Not only that (I mean, come ON, the Americna military has known about EMP bursts and their effects on electronics since the 1950s), but the submarines would still be cruising around out there. If I were a sub commander and got a hint that we had been hit by the Soviets, TRUST ME, I would have nuked Moscow, etc., in a heartbeat, to hell with Presidential authorization.

reply

Good thing you're not a sub commander in real-life.

reply

I second that statement- being in the military means following orders, not being a maverick mentally unstable hothead.

reply

Wanting to defend one's country at any cost does not make one a "maverick mentally unstable hothead". If that is how you see it, then I suggest you count the Founding Fathers in that group, too.

reply

You wouldn't even have to worry about getting authorization, in such a situation, you would have it in a second.

The problem remains that some terrorist group is going to detonate either an EMP device or a dirty bomb at some point of time. When that happens to any degree of effectiveness, our country (the U.S.) will collapse economically.

Anyone interested in stopping this from happening? Here's what we need to do:

(1) Stop involving ourselves in the mid east. Finish up in Iraq and get out. Develop non-oil based fuel. Build nuclear plants. Stop giving foreign aid to anyone. Stop selling weapons to anyone in the mid east. Call a truce with the Islamic nutjobs. Believe me, they want an end to this as well. http://www.acsa2000.net/press/Oct292004bin_laden_tape.htm

(2) Implement a missile defense system. We need an ABM system immediately.
