this movie's script was actually just average or even almost goofy. i'm watching it again today and it has so much 80s charm to it. it was cast very well and directed very well. the soundtrack was perfect for it. this movie stood the test of time.
Exactly. The movie has no plot, no storyline. It's just guys in a flight school.
It would've made more sense for Maverick to get his ass kicked at the beginning by the migs, go to the school and get better, then have a rematch with the migs at the end and kick their ass. As it is, Mav kicks their ass at the beginning and again at the end. He's always been a confident skilled pilot, so I don't understand the arc of his character.
The movie works because they have a great director and cast like you said. Other stuff like the editing, music, cinematography, aerial choreography, production design - it's all perfect.
His arc is that he has huge potential but loses his confidence, then regains it. Also his ego takes a beating when he fails to win the trophy he wanted, but he proved himself in the field. He also finds a nice bitch.
It’s basically a rip-off of An Officer And A Gentleman.
More than enough plot to hang the music video flight-porn on, and as the OP says the actors really sell it.
