Unintentionally Homoerotic?

I remember reading in Details Magazine back in the 90s, that "Top Gun" is the most unintentionally homoerotic film ever. I don't agree with that assessment. Does anybody believe that?

I just watched it again a few days ago and there is a lot of homoerotica, intentional or otherwise. I think back in the 80's we just saw it as male bonding. I know I didn't think about the references back then at all.

reply

Yeah right. People made fun of it right away.

reply

I doubt it was unintentional.

reply

I don't agree with that assessment at all. It was totally intentional homoerotic.

It is homoerotic at times, but the "most"? I don't know. There are a few weird scenes that stick out like a sore thumb, but there are also enough scenes of normal heterosexuality or that don't otherwise have any weirdness to them that kind of even things out. The sex scene between Cruise and what's her face is pretty steamy, for instance, as is most of their dialogue, despite some obvious lack of chemistry/acting talent on the female lead's part. It's a heterosexual movie for the most part, or at least a very convincing facsimile of one.

But it definitely seems like there's something going on between Kilmer and Cruise at times, but it's mostly subtle and subconscious, almost subliminal. Not sure what Tony Scott was going for here. Maybe he was secretly gay, and that was one of the reasons he killed himself in the 2010s. We'll never know, probably.

If you don't think so then you need to watch this

LOL!

I can't believe that I didn't notice any of that when I was younger, but I didn't.

reply

You're correct. It was intentionally homoerotic.
