I like John Landis and the guy can really talk and tell stories. A commentary by him would've been really great and entertaining. Also, the amigos are still alive and a commetary by them would've been cool. I think it's a real waste. It's cool that we get to see some deleted scenes. Hopefully the Kinison scene will be on there, but commentary would've been really cool.
Has he ever actually done a commentary? On Blues Brothers he talks about the movie in a separate documentary, but not a commentary. The version of Animal House that I have he just does a featurette as well.
Commentaries are fundamentally obnoxious and intrusive creations. Why the hell do you want to hear somebody, no matter how enlightened or informative, talk over a movie?
Watch a documentary, or the numerous interviews Landis has conducted about his films (this one included); it's the far more appealing alternative. I applaud him and every other major filmmaker (Spielberg, Allen, Eastwood, Lynch) who knows that the only way to properly experience a movie is to have the audio act in synch with the visuals.
"...if that was off, I'd be whoopin' your ass up and down this street." ~ an irate Tarantino
It depends on who's doing the commentary. Some people are very entertaining and it's fun to listen to what they have to say about the movie. Some are bad, especially when it's people just patting themselves on the back.
