We want a sequel, NOT a remake

I for one am sick to death of remakes. Hollywood has made a permanent home in the gutter and no longer supports talent. Therefore, forget seeing the great actors in sequels. The first thing fans need to do is protest any remakes and refuse to support them. Secondly, know that nobody needs $10 million to make a film. Nowadays, a few SLR cameras and some great writing and direction would make films that are great. Not only that, but they could be made like films used to be made before the 1990s. Three Amigos 2 would be no exception. It would easily be made on a lower scale. This would eliminate the Hollywood suit and ties. Besides, all their damn movies are the same anyway. Predictable scripts and acting styles. Same old crap. We need new direction. And I would rather see experienced talent than young, green, pretty boys and skanks on screen.

The Three Amigo was considered a box disappointment and probably lost money ($3-$5M) in 1986. Most of the reviews were "it wasn't that good" and the three stars had other opportunities. Realize in 1986 ex-SNL comedy movies were all over the place so it was considered lamer than Ghostbusters, Fletch! or Beverly Hills Cop. Additionally, the movie itself was a comedic re-imagining of the Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai so movie buffs were making the same "Hollywood Is Out Of Ideas" back then.

Oddly enough, The Three Amigos has aged fairly well:
1) The story was re-imagined (and improved) with Galaxy Quest and A Bug's Life. (In certain ways Tropic Thunder although the details were vastly different.) It was also re-imaged in the really bad Oz The Great And Powerful.
2) In all reality this 1980s SNL comedy cycle continued to get worse. Chevy and Dan Ackroyd arguably would not have any more good leading roles, Martin sort of went dramedy (Parenthood), Murray went inconsistent on his terms and Eddie Murphy would go on binge of bad movies.
3) In the post Farrelly brothers world, The Three Amigos feels like a good family comedy. This has helped a lot of these 1980s comedies.

Lastly, Hollywood has ALWAYS remade movies and the classic studio system actually did it more often than today. I love Howard Hawks as a director but realize he made four movies that were remakes of earlier Hawks movies (Man Favorite Sport, El Dorado, Rio Lobo, A Song Is Born) and additionally re-imagined two of his best movies, Red River (Mutiny On The Bounty) and His Girl Friday (Front Page.)

From a 2011 interview with Landis by the AV Club:

AVC: Could you ever be convinced to do a Three Amigos sequel?

JL: Absolutely. We had a great time making that movie. I have to tell you, literally a month ago, I did a restoration of Three Amigos for Blu-ray. It comes out in November. It is f-cking gorgeous. I’m so pleased with it. It looks like three-strip Technicolor. It’s beautiful. Plus, as a bonus, there are about 23 minutes of deleted scenes. That movie makes me laugh and the guys [Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short] loved making that movie.
So, you never know.
