Three Amigos! was in development for a long while before it finally hit movie theaters in December of 1986, with co-writer Steve Martin attached to star from the project’s inception in 1980. Over the following years, a number of other actors were considered for the other starring roles, including John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Robin Williams, Bill Murray, and Rick Moranis. Steven Spielberg was also rumored to be considering directing the project at one stage. In the end, director John Landis was brought on to film the script written by Martin, Lorne Michaels, and songwriter Randy Newman. Time has been kind to Three Amigos!, with longstanding audience affection for the project and strong performance on video and cable television offsetting poor critical reaction to the movie (Roger Ebert called it his least favorite movie of the year when appearing with star Chevy Chase on a late night television program) and mildly disappointing performance at the box office.
