Kudos To Paramount's Makeup Department

Ever notice no one's toupee' comes off when splashing around in San Francisco harbor?
Wonder how many takes were needed to get it right?

I've long suspected he had hair plugs by then.

What about everyone else?
Walter Koenig was halfway to slick by '86, Nimoy no longer had the "silken threads" of his youth and Nichols' wig looked like something Tammy Faye would put on after losing a bet.

True, but we didn't see them swimming underwater, so I imagine all they needed was some pretty secure glue and/or spray.

(We did see Spock underwater earlier in the whale tank, but I don't know whether that was Nimoy or a stunt double. Anyway, Nimoy wasn't bald.)

Shatner's hair looks pretty authentic in the underwater shots.

"Oh no...they sent the wrong Spock!"

Agreed. That's why I'm not convinced he's still wearing a rug at that point.

There was a story going around several years ago that an angry mother pulled Shat's dome doily off at an airport after he refused her son's request for an autograph.

I noticed that. I just watched it for the first time on BluRay and on an HD TV and it looked quite natural in those shots even with the added resolution.

When Shat was under water I thought "Wow, he had to be more nervous about his toupee coming off than he was about drowning.".

Maybe that's what ate up the special effects budget. We probably would have seen three capital starships engage the offending probe, but all the time and money went to making Shatner's hair convincing underwater.

Well, Nimoy had the headband to hold his piece on.
