Why didn't Kirk just tell the truth?

When he begins to explain to Gillian that he is from the 23rd century he starts out strong. But then you can tell he realizes how silly the story sounds and finishes by coming up with "repopulating the species."

Why didn't he just say that Earth is in danger of being destroyed by an alien force. I feel like that would have been more believable of a story to tell her.

Actually, considering he is talking to a marine biologist worried about the extinction of a beloved species, Kirk's explanation sounds way more plausible than "aliens are attacking the Earth and only whales can save us".
