The kids getting to a phone faster than Ace makes no sense
This movie is one of those powerful, nostalgic 1980s classics, and a rare one in that it has NO INJECTED ROMANCE.
Yes, this is one of those SUPER rare mainstream movies that have absolutely no injected romance, with female characters that are almost non-existent. Just count how many females you see in this movie besides someone's mother, or the people in the Barf-o-Rama story.
(Realistically, Ace's gang would have at least a couple of girls with them - after all, women are THE reason for young men to become thugs or basically do anything 'disruptive' or 'dangerous', even when other reasons do exist)
This time, I would like to point out the biggest plot hole in this whole movie that I ALWAYS wonder about. It always feels so weird and jarring in such an otherwise well-crafted story (besides the ridiculousness like crazed train drivers (engineers?) that just won't slow down the train at all for kids - they should have the Spaceballs 'We break for no one' bumper sticker - yes, I know it says 'nobody' in the movie, but people are not bodies).
How the heck do they just put some tarp on the dead body (why waste such a valuable piece of camping equipment on a mass of dead cells anyway? It's not like the dead kid is gonna feel cold) and then walk to the phone to give an anonymous phone call before Ace's gang comes back, takes the body or at least brings authorities there or whatnot?
(I forgot what Ace's plan was, but surely they could have done it now that the kids have started their arduous, long walk back - and Ace's gang never has to even hurry, they have a CAR..)
It's like Ace and his gang just disappeared from the movie after the kids completed this level and beat the boss. In life, it shouldn't work that way - Ace is still there, plotting revenge, and would most likely come back as soon as they estimate the kids are gone, and do whatever they planned to do in the first place. They know the kids would and could not stay long, and would not guard the body or anything, so what were they thinking? What was Ace's plan, did they just 'forget about it' after saying they wouldn't?
None of it makes ANY sense.
A thug gang of bullies like that wouldn't just disappear from the story, they would come back, or they would find the kids, or be waiting for them in town, or they would tell their parents all kinds of stuff, especially about the gun, so cops might be waiting for the kids.. as well as doing WHATEVER they planned to do with the body anyway. How are the kids going to stop them, when they need days just to return, and Ace's gang can zip back and forth with his car as much as they want?
What the kids decided is irrelevant, it has no bearing on the events. As soon as they start walking back, they should know Ace will just take the body, become a 'hero' and be on TV, or whatever he heck he planned, or he would be waiting in town and just punch the kids in the face (something like this happens in the original story, sadly)..
I think inclusion of Ace and his gang was a bit unnecessary, the story would have worked fine without that 'extra bully drama' that now makes things make no sense.
If ONLY the kids knew about the body, then this whole thing would make sense, but since a powerful, car-owning bully gang with a psycho as a leader ALSO knows about the body, Ace letting the kids make 'an anonymous call' (or whatever) about the body makes no sense.
