i know it was in '86, but i'm wondering if it was one of those weird coincidences, and that maybe it release right b4 the challenger exploded???? (challenger exploded in late january, so it is possible).... anybody know?
"She was all torn up like she was Tippi Hedrin or some sh*t!"
It should have been pushed back further or never released IMHO.
I remember seeing this when it was released, and I remember feelings of sadness at seeing the launch, remembering what I saw on TV that January day of 1986.
Spacecamp was simply a victim of bad timing. If it would have been released in late 1985, it would have grossed more than $10 million I have no doubt.
But - seeing as how America was still grieving for the Challenger 7, the release of this film was simply too painful a reminder for most to re-live again.
The premise was a bit corny, along with some of the acting, but I found it enjoyable.
Totally agree with the release being pushed back, but not released? Too harsh.
I don't mean to sound insensitive, but I thought it was way over the top that the soundtrack was withdrawn in light of the Challenger disaster. Please, don't misunderstand me, the event hit me like a ton of bricks as a kid, and at the time I harbored strong dreams about becoming an Astronaut.
Yes,at the time it was probably right to withdraw the soundtrack album. However, since that time, the soundtrack album only ever enjoyed an official limited pressing on CD in Japan and countless high quality bootleg CD's after that.
It is an excellent score by John Williams and it deserves to be heard. Indeed if it were to be re-released, I believe they should dedicate the recording to the memory of the crew of Challenger, I'm sure no-one would object to this.
I apologize in advance for offending anyone, that was not my intention! I just happen to really like this film and it's score. IMHO Space Camp has committed no crime apart from bad timing.

After seeing how bad this movie is the executives at the studio should have taken the Challenger disaster as the perfect opportunity to shelve this Turkey for all time. The idiotic, annoying robot alone should have been reason enought to burn every last copy of the celluloid of this miserable excuse for a movie. If there's a hell, Space Camp must be playing there.
I actually saw the Challenger blow up and not initially through TV, like most of you did. That didn't happen until I got home to watch the news later on. I was at work, but had stopped working to watch the launch from the other side of Florida. Where I was at in SW Florida, afforded me a very good view of the launch, after the first few seconds.
Yes, it was sobering for sure. However, that would not have stopped me from going up in space on another shuttle, the very next day.
Now, to stay on topic. The movie was filmed in 1985 and was scheduled to come out in February. We know why the release was held back. I first saw the movie on a drive in movie screen, in August or September of 1986, when I moved back to Indiana. Yes, that kinda dates me. Hey, H may be 60 years old now, but I'm still a dreamer at heart!
The IMDb rightflly called it a "marketing disaster". As a previous poster said, release it BEFORE 1986 and you probably make a few bucketloads more of money.
Supermodels...spoiled stupid little stick figures mit poofy lips who sink only about zemselves.
Well, DUH, it's not like they KNEW it was going to happen (the explosion) "Hey, guys' we better move up the release date, 'cause if we release it after the explosion, we won't make as much money"
As to never releasing it.... Yep. Better never make a movie with a high-rise skyscraper, Or planes crashing. Or hurricanes.
Cause you know, people died when that happened, and we don't want to OFFEND anyone.... Pile of crap. We've gotten so OVER-sensative, it's just utterly rediculous! I grew up in a fairly strict Baptist/christian home, and still believe/etc, and while I appriciate friend/co-workers/whoever that knows I'm a christian and don't like to hear certain words, and they make an effort to not use them, I don't jump on their case if they do, and if I'm walking down the street and hear someone swearing or whatever, I don't get on their case. Now, if they're swearing AT ~me~, and especially if I don't deserve it, then I'll react differently, but then it's more the anger, vs. the words.
Are we gunna start making girls wear veils, in case we offend a Muslim child/parent? What about them offending me? Where do we stop the cycle? Eddy ~~~
"Gibbs, I'm fine! I have only one stalker, and he has an alibi."
Actually I bet they were planning to release just after the Challenger mission to take advantage of the all planned positive publicity for NASA with teacher Christa McAliffe (sp??) onboard.
I'm fairly sure that was the plan....But "The Fickle Finger of Fate" poked them in the eye on that one...
It really would have been in bad taste if they had released it any sooner....tho I think they should have waited a little longer...maybe closer to Christmas...
With you all the way Belle. I first saw Space Camp when I was around 10 or 11. Little did I know that one day I would get to visit Kennedy Space Center. I know most people can go there, but for a humble Brit like me, it was utterly awe-inspiring. This film, along with the IMAX film 'The Dream is Alive' are up there with anything I grew up with. I mean, my god, they made a TV movie about Challenger. No one blew a fuse over that. People can't blame the film Space Camp for it's timing. It was a terrible coincidence and bad luck. I'm sure the people involved never meant to hurt or offend anybody.
*SIGH*

This came out after Challenger- I remember the huge groans in a cinema where I saw the trailer. I think everyone there thought "why didn't they shelve this movie?"
