12 hours of Oxygen

Couldn't they have simply turned off the life support system in 5 to 15 minutes bursts and saved up a buffer supply to cover re-entry instead of continously leaving it on full blast for 12 hours?

Not without suffering ill effects of carbon dioxide poisoning!

This isn't Star Trek. So like the other poster said, it would not have worked.

Or worse: it might have malfunctioned and not come on again. An astronaut would be able to hardware-hack this....but a bunch of nitwits?

It would have been simpler to chuck a couple of the more annoying kids out the airlock: that would give given them about another four hours.

You also lose a lot more oxygen in those bursts than just keeping it on.

12 hours worth of oxygen is 12 hours worth of oxygen and the only way to conserve oxygen is to turn off what is consuming it.
