Good Dramatic Moments - Spoilers

I recently rewatched this (it was one of my favorites as a kid), and I still loved it. Obviously, I'm biased since it was a childhood favorite, but I still think the premise is exciting and the characters are interesting. I really love the idea of young adults forced into adult situations where they have to step up and overcome their fears, etc. It's always a good theme. I thought they built up a lot of great moments for each character - Tate Donovan having to be the true shuttle commander and flip the switch, Rudy getting the cables right, Max being a vital part of their survival, and Lea Thompson flying the the ship. Kate Capshaw was great too. It's a fun movie still, and fun to see some of these actors (Joaquin Phoenix! aka Leaf) in early roles. My favorite moments are:
1. When the thermal curtain fails and they launch
2. When they flip the switch from auto to manual
3. When Lea T. flies back into the earth's atmosphere

& the part that always freaked me out as a kid was when Max is floating away! Ah.

When they realize Tish is using MORSE code, I thought that was a great scene.

The launch itself has always been the most dramatic and best scene to me (even if I now know how many flaws there are in the launch sequence, I'm still getting goosebumps watching it right now on DVD).

However, it makes me realize how completely amazing it would be if we'd ever been able to see a Shuttle Pilot/Commander be able to successfully perform a full manual launch (the entire sequence is computerized and run through the Shuttle's 4 main onboard computers).
