It's really awful these days, but they should have known better even in 1986.

Reminds me of C. Thomas Howell and "Soul Man", but that had more uproar than "Short Circuit".

Aziz Ansari makes a big deal of this in "Master of None," episode 4, "Indians on TV." This episode features a producer who objects that a three-buddy-film cannot have two Indian actors, and suggests that the two compete to see if one can "curry" favor with the staff.
