anybody know who major Max was supposed to represent? was it Roberto D'Aubuisson?

It was a death squad named after former Salvadoran president Maximiliano Hernández Martínez.

The original poster is correct on who Major Max was supposed to represent. Oliver Stone clearly states this in the commentary.

It was definitively d'Aubisson. He ran for president, just like "Major Max" in the movie. The political party in the movie was called "ARANA" and in real life it's "ARENA" (the Nationalist Republican Alliance). Roberto d'Aubisson looked like Tony Plana who played Major Max and in real life was nicknamed "Major Bob."
