No, Full Metal Jacket is good all the way through although yes the middle is a bit slower than the first and last thirds. Platoon is a much better film however.

Platoon certainly takes itself a bit too seriously, and the music score and voiceover is melodramatic, but if feels more authentic thanks to being shot in 'the shit' by nam vet Stone.

Full Metal Jacket is a perfectly serviceable movie about boot camp and the psychological toll of war.
Platoon, on the other hand, is a totally epic depiction of wartime brutality. It has much better and more realistic combat scenes, especially the ending battle where there's explosions and killing everywhere. It has a raging climax with the bad guy's eyes lighting up like the devil before an explosion knocks him over. The climax of FMJ however is an anti-climax with a bunch of guys standing over a mortally wounded sniper trying to decide what to do with her.
The only good part from Full Metal Jacket is the first 45 minutes.
