Why do the police have a flamethrower?
And why has nobody asked this question yet?
shareBecause it was in the script.
A naked American man stole my balloons
Have you ever policed a college campus? Those kids can get pretty rowdy. Flame throwers keep them in line.
shareI'm sure the various police departments have all sorts of toys and gadgets that we probably think they shouldn't have. John Oliver recently did a segment on money and things that the police seize which essentially goes towards purchasing things that they wouldn't otherwise get funding for. This includes all sorts of military grade weapons and vehicles, so it's not unbelievable that they'd have a flame thrower.
shareIt could be something from the evidence locker confiscated by the cops and being kept until used as evidence in a trial.
shareIt looked like an old WWII surplus junker.
shareAgreed. I don't think it would have been in a small town police department armory. Shotguns would be the extent of it. The armory dude was from Gremlins and Chopping Mall though.

It's intentionally silly, a joke.
shareObviously so the ultra-classic line "What I'm going to need is your standard flame thrower" could be delivered.

Sad story. You got a smoke?
Yeah - reminds me of "The Hidden" where a flamethrower is used but they say something like "Vice picked this up off one of the homeboys" to give it some credence.

Because it was a question that never needed to be asked of a movie about alien parasites turning people into zombies.
