Where did this movie take place?
In the American version there is no telling of where the story takes place. It was obviously in Europe, western Europe more likely. Does anybody know for a fact?

shareA part of the movie, the car chase, jump over bridge and car going down the stairs was shot in Zagreb, Croatia. The stairs are from the main Zagreb's square and bridge is also the main bridge that conects the old and the new town in Zagreb.
shareThanks. Even though it was shot in Zagreb that still doesn't tell of where the plot was set. I think that Croatia was suppose to double for Spain.
shareAnother part of the movie was made in Austria. I know, because the car in which the men in the hoods flee in the beginning has an austrian license plate. And the castle in front of which Jackie meets Alan is Castle Schönbrunn in Vienna.
I think the rest of the movie is set in Italy, but they don't say so in the german version as well.

Thanks but that still doesn't tell me where the story takes place. The locations could have been faked for another place.
shareI'm working on the cheesy dubbed version at the moment, and I think the European scenes are supposed to be set in Italy, but the background chatter is a mixture of English, Spanish and Italian; the camp waiter is French and he charges them in denarii for the three beers. So maybe it's set in ancient Rome. I'm pretty sure the auction at the start is supposed to be in Italy, anyway, as the guy dubbing the auctioneer is trying manfully to do an Italian accent.
sharePart of the movie plays in Slovenia. The castle at the end of the movie is called Predjamski Grad!
shareYes it was shot in couple of places called Motovun, Pazin, Buzet, Pula, Zagreb, and in Slovenia, the name escapes me now. The reason that I know is because I am one of the kids playing around my best friend is riding a bike on the old square in Motovun, right now Motovun hosts one of the more popular movie festivals in the region. I got the chance to meet Jackie and some of the other cast and got their autographs. I was 8 years old but I still remeber it like it was yesterday.
shareI'm not asking for where the it was shot, I'm asking for where the story was set, ficticiously. Why is that so hard for all you people to to understand!!?
shareE U R O P E ! ! !
Why is it so hard for you to understand? To chinese people all europeans look the same, and all of europe looks the same. To them it is enough to say that it was made in europe, and that the story takes place in europe. That's it. If it was of any consequence to producers, writers or anyone else it would have been said, and it's not, therefore it is irrelevant. When you watched "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was it important WHERE in China is story set? For the same reason "Rumble In The Bronx" was made on west coast and Bronx is probably on "the other one", but to people who live in China even Canada or Mexico would be close enough because they couldn't care less about the position of Bronx inside usa!
The sequel tells that it takes place in Spain through subtitles. I thought that probably a non-american version of the movie might say so too.
sharei don't remember exactly because i saw it ages ago, but i think first part also mentiones spain at some point but i don't remember if the whole story was in spain or just some part... but as i told you in the previous post, people that made this film couldn't have cared less about european geography and that is the reason why the film takes place on location widely known as "somewhere in europe". :) the european version doesn't contain anything more precise than the american one.
look at it from their point of wiev: looking from any other continent entire europe [minus russia] is a greasy smudge on the end of the map... and to make it worse it's all cut out into myriad small coutries each of them on their own less than irrelevant. saying that europe is a continent it is an insult to other continents. :) if i was you i'd go to china and ask first man on the street if he knew who napoleon or carl the great were. they'd probably try "rock musician" and then ask you if they guesed correctly. :)))
I presume that your comments about Europe were intended as tongue in cheek.
You can't possibly be serious about each country in Europe being irrelevant on it's own, can you? Europe may well be the smallest Continent, but to class it as a greasy smudge is pretty nieve. Europe has played a pretty big part in the development of the world as we know it today. I'll admit it's had a few hiccups along the way. But overall, I don't think we'd be exchanging views in this manner if Europe had not been "Europe"!
You forget all the things, you just do it!
I was just exagerating to make a point. ;)
I think he movie Kwai tsan tseh (1984) worked as a prequel of sorts to this one, and it was set in Spain.
So my best guess is that this movie was set in Spain as well, but production was cheaper in Austria and former Yugoslavia.
If this should be indeed the fact, they just made a mistake by having the waiter charge them in "denarii", as pabloquema put it, because the currency of Yugoslavia at the time was Dinar. The guy playing the waiter said "dinar" instead of "Pesetas" or whatever, but they either didn't notice the mistake, or they thought it was too expensive or it would be too much trouble to do this minor scene again.
Just my thouhgts.
Kwai Tsan Tseh is not a prequel, nor is it connected to this movie in story.
sharebiggest part of the movie was made in Zagreb & Motovun (Croatia)
shareI think some scenes are supposed to take place in Germany or Austria. In the scene where Jackie and Alan trespass on the estate with all the guard dogs, there hung a sign on the door which read "Vorsicht! Diebtier." This translates from German literally as "Careful! Thief-animal." (As far as I know, however, Diebtier isn't a real word. They were probably trying to say something like, "Warning to thieves: Animals/guard dogs!")
I think some on-screen prompts indicating the location would have been nice since Jackie's journeys in this film clearly took him to several different countries.
@Ryno II:
I agree with you as far as this movie doesn't make any references to other Jackie-movies.
But I think that Jackies movies, especially in the 80's, were not very well thought through. I mean he and his classmates made quite a lot of flicks at the time. So I think they wanted movies to look different and well, one movie was made in Europe, then they made some in Asia and then they thought: "Hey, why not go back to Europe, with more money for filming and even less a plot?"
In this narrow margin it very well works as a sequel. Thats why I said "of sorts".
@Wally:
Somebody posted earlier, that it really doesn't matter to any chinese guy from what european country you are, because Europe looks the same everywhere for them and that this movie is set "somewhere in Yurop". And I think he's right.
This explains the sign "Vorsicht!Diebtier.", which I never noticed before but was mildly amusing to me when you mentioned it. Because I am from Austria.
And of course this sign is nonsense.
My guess is, they just translated chinese signs to english (which would make no sense, as well), and later, when needed, translated them directly into german, giving a flying fart about coherence, because they had no noteworthy plot, and, even worse, no proper ending in the first place.
Which led me to think that this movie was a sequel to "that other movie with Jackie in Europe".
Oh, I see. The suquel took place in spain, so maybe this one does to.
shareIt probably takes place in several europian countries - in Germany and in Yugoslavia, because the waiter did say "dinar" and dinars were showed there, if I saw it correctly. So, ptoza was right - it happens in Europe.
shareI agree with you! I think that a part of the movie is supposed to be set in Germany or Austria as the sign was in German and said "Vorsicht! RAUBTIERE" (there is no such word as Diebtier) which means "Beware of the carnivore/predator" (I don't think there is an English word the exact same meaning, a Raubtier is a wild animal which eats meat, such as Lions, Tigers, Panthers or Bears) or at least somewhere in Western Europe.
And I guess the latter part is supposedly set in former Yugoslavia as the currency was dinars. And the scenery (including the women with the headscarves, which you didn't find in Western Europe) looks rather South-East European.
EDIT: I've seen the film again today. The number plate on Jackie's car was an Austrian one (they used to be white on black background and the W at the beginning stands for Vienna) and if I'm not mistaken the one on May's car was Austrian too, and as it seems like she is supposed to be a local (though May definitely isn't a German/Austrian name) I guess it is set in Austria (though it was only partly filmed there).
Later during the car chase there were so many cars, and I'm sure there were some with different (black) number plates, most I've spotted where white. I could make one out beginning with "ZG" which most likely stands for Zagreb, so this part of the movie is possibly set in former Yugoslavia.
Hah interesting discussion even if redundant I'll add my 2 pence.... I always thought the first part with the mansion etc was France but after watching it again and noticing the sign, I'd say Germany.. However like said before when the get the drinks they're charged in Dinar and when I looked it up, Croatia was one of the countries that used it.. and obviously as others have said they could tell from landmarks etc.. Quite crazy I think it being shot there lol..
Another point though is when they first get Laura and Alan back, Jackie says he'll take them to Frankfurt airport in the morning. So Germany again.
I don't see anything that alludes to it being set in France, Italy or Spain though.
So other than just 'Europe', I'd say Germany and surroung countries possibly.
