Just watched the Director's Cut
Astonishing. The original ending footage actually appears brighter with superior resolution (in most segments) to the rest of the film.
Truly the treat fans have been waiting for.

I agree, and it only took a mere 25 years.

Great blu ray transfer. Just watched it myself. It's great to see the original ending after all these years. Still remembervseeingbthis in the theaters when I was a kid. Love the cast.

He didn't write it, it is the original stage ending.
Let Zygons Be Zygons.
To be fair, his take on the ending is probably darker than the stage version.
At least the stage version lets the dead characters come back to sing the final song (they appear as part of the plant). It takes the sting out of their deaths.
I agree, I have seen it on stage and can easily see why test audiences didn't like Frank's version of the end.

So I popped in my older DVD for my kids last night...followed by the alternate ending (in shoddy black & white)...
had NO flippin' idea the original ending was redone cleanly for the recent Blu Ray...shame on me!
Some are saying the original ending is true to the play, a deserving end to Seymour and all around "better", but I STRONGLY disagree...Oz said it best that we grow attached to these characters throughout the film and to lose them...so tragically (Audrey's death was sad....Seymour's was "nightmarish") and have the plant win supreme....not the right ending to this movie and would've been maligned and disliked just as bad as The Mist's current ending (BTW, I wouldn't change that one).
My kid of 13 & 9 also IMMEDIATELY HATED the "bad" ending (although my son liked the "Godzilla" feel to it)...I imagine many kids back in '86 would've felt the same way!!!! I may in the minority on this thread, but gimme the happy sappy ending...at least for THIS film.

I don't even mind the "deserved" ending for Seymour and him losing all he gained with the plant is only logical. I just don't really feel it's as good as the theatrical ending. It's too over the top with the soldiers, the plant on the Statue of Liberty. It should have ended with Seymour dying, imo.
Also, I think the character development in the theatrical ending (with Seymour finding some self worth in Audrey's love that has nothing to do with the plant and confronting the plant) is more interesting.
Not to mention the movie reads like a campy B-movie from the era for a reason and in those movies, the threat was always destroyed so it makes more sense, I think, to keep that continuity with the rest of the movie.
And of course the intended ending is missing one of my favorite cameo of the whole movie: James Belushi! His scene is brilliant!

Also Audrey II's death in the theatrical ending is straight up hilarious, and the movie and play is comedy, after all.
"Oh,$#!+!" *KABOOM*
