Keep in mind that the 1986 theatrical release is the only version with a happy ending, and that's only because test audiences hated the original version.
In the 1960 film version, Seymour dies. In the stage play, both Seymour and Audrey are eaten. In the Director's cut of the 1986 film, not only do Seymour and Audrey get eaten, but the plant goes on a King Kong sized rampage and takes over the earth.
Yes, they could use the 1986 happy ending, but is that ending really appropriate? Seymour was an accessory to a couple of deaths, after all. Maybe he didn't kill the dentist and Mr. Mushnik directly, but he didn't do much to stop them either. So after that, he deserves a white picket fence house with Audrey as his wife?
Don't get me wrong. I really enjoy this movie, but the subject matter in general may be a bit dark for a Live TV Musical. At least when you compare it to the recent Live TV releases such as "Sound of Music", "Peter Pan" and "The Wiz".
